First Entry

I tried to NPOV the article. There should be nothing in the article to which a Barelvi, or Salafi, or a non-Muslim would object. I stripped out all the praise and all the locutions that assumed that the Deobandi approach was the proper one. Zora 21:01, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

...including those statements actually on the official website! Perhaps the link to the official website should be deleted too. --Wetman 06:58, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

I agree that it is in need of a major rewrite and there was lots of POV and unnecessary praise - all those quotes and stuff from the website is all unnecessary...but the link to the official website should still remain. There are still a few mistakes and inaccuracies and some of it doesnt make sense, i will expand when i have the time Tanzeel 15:20, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

I myself would like a precis of what's distinctive about Deobandi thought, and how it differs from Barelvi and Salafi traditions. I understand that there is a long-running rivalry between Barelvi and Deobandi, and I'd like to hear more about that. Zora 17:57, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Anonymous attempts to censor this article continue, including sourced text from Deobandi websites. Some honest translating of Deobandi material would improve this article. --Wetman 13:00, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Sourced texts are fine, but you can't use it to support a claim not made by the text. Interpreting whether a text goes "completely against Deobandi tenets" is against WP:NOR. If you can find a reliable published source that makes this interpretation then source that, otherwise it shouldn't be here. --Barastert 18:51, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Background Section needs POV edit

The first two paragraphs either need verifiable citiations or they should be rewritten from a Neutral POV. --- Skapur 15:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I have edited the first paragraph. The original statement about the British providing support to Catholics does not make much sense as the British in 1857 were very much Protestent and very much anti-catholic.

There seems to be no mention that there are two Darul Ulooms! After the storming of the original Darul Uloom in 1977 on the day of centennial celebrations by local mafia/anti social elements under the leadership of Darul Uloom alumnus Asad Madani whose son still runs the old one today, a new one was built on the outskirts of Deoband with the same name, by the original founder's great grandson, Muhammad Saalim Qasmi (except with the words "Waqf", or "social trust" in English which Madani's taken over institue has dropped, making it a private university.) This glaring omission from the history of the institution casts doubt over the credibility of the rest of the information as well. The Islamist Govts and all other islamist organizations in the world failed to notice that all the people in the world that Christians are not arrogant and amongst them Christians are priest and monks according to the Quranic verse 5: 82 .In the absence of the same ,there is no peace between the 2 largest population of the world . Once the Holy Quran recognized Christianity , then no Christians can criticize that Islamic community is false or Satan community. All the Islamist in the world are the followers of Our Jesus , Moses and Muhammad ( peace be upon them). We have any other intention except to spread the messages to all the communities in the world posted in our website www.goldenduas.com to promote harmony peace and security of mankind in the world. The question of converting Christianity and all other communities in the world into Islam does not arise on the reason that the Holy Quran banned compulsory conversion as per Quranic verse 2:256. The Christians in the world are service minded people towards peace, research, etc. to serve public in the world and as such no one can act against the Christianity in the world . Terror links

A lot of media reports and evidence with Indian and foreign agencies indicate that this organization is the epicentre and originator of most Islamic terrorism in south Asia. Why is there no mention of that in the article? Sacrificing the truth for the sake of "political correctness" as usual, huh? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.200.95.130 (talk) 00:06, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Addition of unencyclopaedic material

I reverted the addition of a large amount of material, apparently copied verbatim from the Dar ul Ulum website. Apart from anything else, this material was written in an unencyclopaedic manner. Reverted to edit of 20:29, 8 January 2008. Imc (talk) 19:49, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

List of Alumni - deletions

Recent edit to the list of scholars in the article, though with all the good intentions, deleted some famous people e.g. Ubaidullah Sindhi. Some others, holding important academic/religious positions, could remain in my humble opinion. Considering the 'sensitive' nature of this article, such issues may be discussed on this page before deletion etc, to give time for response to those with expertise/knowledge in this area.(I am not an expert to do it myself; I contribute copy edits here and there mainly). In many respects this is a virtually meaningless article. It says nothing about the type of Islam this original deobandi seminary teaches or the influence the deobandi school of Islam has had in Pakistan and especially on the Taliban. The section on terrorism is propaganda. One needs to check the External Links to provide a corrective. Also I question the spelling of Islam as "Islaam." This is not standard English.Thank you Mary Wilbur 6/11/11 (I'm not signed in.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.1.44.204 (talk) 09:39, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Repeated change of spelling

Anonymous editors have been changing the spelling of common words without explanation. (e.g., the most recent at [1]). These have been repeatedly reverted, since they run contrary to standard usage and are unreferenced. No doubt there is some good reason for this, but as they have not explained it before, this is a request to them to post an explanation for these here. Thanks. Pattern of education

The text is highly uninformed. The article betrays ignorance of the writer about basic Islamic terms. Sharee'ah and Fiqh are not two different subjects. Sharee'ah Uloom is a general word applied to all the sciences taught in Islamic seminaries. Tasawwuf is not taught. Not a single book on Tasawwuf is included in the syllabus. In fact, Tasawwuf is something to be practised, not learnt and mugged up. Quran exegesis, Hadith books, Principles of Hadith, Principles of Jurisprudence, Arabic Prose, Arabic Poetry, Arabic Grammar, Logic, Philosophy, Principles of Jurisprudence, Islamic Jurisprudence, Prophet Muhammad's biography, Islamic history, etc. are some of the subjects that are included in the curriculum. Source is the official curriculum book of Darul Uloom Deoband. And as an alumnus myself, I have not just known this but experienced it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Musarhad (talkcontribs) 10:09, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Needing a better citation

"The magazine, of the Ilm-e-Agahi literacy charity in Karachi, Pakistan, wrote, "Darul-Uloom Deoband, is not merely an old-type institution of Islamic ; it is, rather, the name of a glorious movement for the revivification of Islam and the stability of the community. Darul-Uloom, Deoband, was a centre of revolution and political, training. It nurtured such a body of such a body of self-sacrificing soldiers of Islam and sympathisers of the community who themselves wept in the grief of the community and also made others weep; who themselves tossed about restlessly for the restitution of the Muslims' dignity and caused others also to toss about. They themselves sacrificed their lives for the attainment of respectable life and also taught the lesson of self-sacrifice and self-denial to others. They shattered the Muslims' intellectual stagnation, they broke up the spell of the British imperialism, and, grappling with the contemporary tyrannical powers, dispelled fear and anxiety from the minds of the country. Not only this; they kindled the candle of freedom in the political wilderness of Aligarh, extricated from the baseness of ideal, created the sense of the superficiality of objective, and in that assembly where the law of muteness was in force, where tongues were chopped off on talking and where sentinels were set on the minds, they blew the trumpet of revolution, and rescuing a large body of young men from the squalor of toadayis life appointed them on the post of guidance in the struggle for the independence of the country. It is a historical fact that the political awakening that was created in Aligarh in the beginning of the twentieth century was indebted to Deoband and some other revolutionary movements in the country, and the revolutionary freedom-lovers who rose up there were the products of the grace from the spring of thought of Deoband." "The elders of Deoband took more and more part in the struggle for the independence of the country; they suffered all the troubles of this path and came out successful in every test, After the establishment of Darul-Uloom the period of participation in national politics begins with Hazrat Shaikh al-Hind.Maulana Ubaydullah Sindhi has acknowledged the Shaikh al-Hinds life to be a separate epoch of the Waliyullahian movement. The caravan of resolute men prepared under the leadership of the Shaikh al-Hind included Maulana Ubaydullah Sindhi, Maulana Muhammad Mian Mansoor Ansari, Maulana Fazl-e Rabbi (member Hai'at-e Tamizia, Afghanistan), Maulana Sayfur-Rahman Kabuli, Maulana Muhammad Sadiq Karachwi, Mfti Kifayatullah Dehelvi, Maulana Hussain Ahmed Madani, Maulana Ahmed Ali Lahori and many other great ones. Even today, from India to Pakistan, the graduates of Darul-Uloom Deoband, are guiding the country and the community in the field of politics. The leaders of the movement for Pakistan derived benefit from the course adopted in certain matters by an illustrious religious divine of Deoband, viz., Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi, while Maulana Shabbir Ahmad Usmani was himself among the leaders of the movement for Pakistan and he, with his best scholarly capacities, tried to make the Muslim League firm and steady in the ideal of Islamic state. Then, after the establishment of Pakistan, the Indian leaders of Deoband guided the Indian Muslims in utterly adverse circumstances and helped keep up their spirits high; and in Pakistan the august men of his order took up the gauntlet of reconstruction and service to the country and the community with a new determination and guided the community with their capacities and abilities in every walk of life in Pakistan.""

I removed these paragraphs of quotes because they are too long for the content of the article and also need better citations before they go back in.

University?

The article refers to the institution as both an Islamic "university" and a seminary. While there's not necessarily a contradiction between the two descriptions, seminaries are often (not always) elementary, primary and secondary level institutions, can someone please clarify whether this institution is actually an accredited university? Is University Grants Commission (India) the only university accreditation authority in India? And if so, is this institution accredited by this authority? — Ad Meliora TalkContribs 16:26, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

The institution seems to not be included in the list Consolidated List of All Universities of University Grants Commission (India)Ad Meliora TalkContribs 16:29, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

On relation to the Taliban

The Taliban are taught by the madrassas belonging to darul uloom deoband. A discussion of this connection is wholly missing in the article. Should we add it? 49.205.146.150 (talk) 04:44, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
