Visit of Edward I[edit]

The commonly given date of the Bacon charter as 1286 is wrong, based on Watkin's misreading of the dating clause. See the reference for details. The Torre Abbey thesis (to which I'll have to admit authorship) does give a potted history of the friary which corrects a few other errors in previous accounts.Jjgull (talk) 10:02, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah thanks - I see that I should have read it more thoroughly before I added it as further reading! I take it that you don't know of any good source for Andrews' assertion, which you removed, that the friars were "forced to leave in 1347".  —SMALLJIM  22:03, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's a misreading (or more likely gleaned from G.G. Coulton's work where he misread it) of Grandison's letter on the subject. The letter is dated 1347, but refers to events that happened (the Archbishop of Damascus) in 1344. The 1347 date means nothing, therefore, and 1344 or shortly after is the more likely date.Jjgull (talk) 20:44, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
