Vogueness[edit]

FYI "crop tops" have been in vogue since who knows when, but I recall women wearing them c1983. No doubt they were in fashion before them. 132.181.7.1 06:41, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree! - —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.224.11.64 (talk) 21:11, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My wife has hanging on her office wall a croptop that she purchased from her high schools store in 1987 that just barely covers the bottom of the breasts; I remember clearly, and fondly, this being a very common summer style for females from about 1985 to 1989. The article doesn't seem to quite address this, and makes it out to be almost purely a male thing. i guess I should take a picture of the shirt and put it in the commons. I also need to re-watch the weird science movie again.Paganize 11:51, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Crop tops are are trend from way before Fay rvissian (talk) 23:05, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Homosexual stigma?[edit]

How would I go about introducing the association between wearing belly shirts among men with homosexual stereotyping? I've observed that in media. Tyciol 01:47, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to do this. I don't think any official research has been done. I guess men are REALLY afraid to talk about it?! What I have observed: Half Shirts, or even belly button exposure of any kind, is "Wrong". Obviously everybody thinks (or is supposed to think) "belly button = homosexual." -_- Meanwhile, homosexuals do not appear to ever focus on navel. They probably avoid the subject even more. So this is a horrible stereotype. In Correct (talk) 11:07, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So far I did not add any mention of homosexual stigma, but I did include a quick mention about Peer Pressure. Indeed, other men bully any guy whether he is in a half shirt or even no shirt. And these same type of bullies will probably erase all information that I just posted. In Correct (talk) 11:52, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Clipped sentences[edit]

I am the author of the article. Please feel free to update it with anything useful, but tangential additions like tri-shirts (triathletes have special half shirts???) are not pertinent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.46.221.128 (talk) 21:39, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just saw your comment here. I'll paste here my edit summary, because I feel it probably still applies (then again maybe not now that I've seen the talk page): "Even if you are the "original author" that doesn't mean you own the article, perhaps read WP:OWN? Hope it helps, if I'm wrong here in my assumption let me know". You appear to have a lack of any knowledge about triathlons? I'm something of the opposite.... I do Ironman every year along with many other triathlons. Been doing this since before I was a teenager, I've got many of these types of tops myself. Mathmo Talk 13:36, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Mathmo:

Why do you feel this overwhelming need to add something unfounded to this article? I spent my own time researching this by interviewing people from the companies mentioned in the article, and people who engaged in athletics in the 80's. First off: your grammar and wording are completely flawed (e.g. you started the sentence with "Is common" but in English we say "It is common") and you stuck the sentence in a spot that has nothing to do with your topic.

If you are so intent on advertising these so-called Tri-shirts, why not be happy with your own article that you created about them and PLEASE just leave it out of my article. And don't lecture me about not owning the article. I may have donated this piece to the public by posting it here, but I would ask that you respect it by not adding strange tangential items to it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.46.221.128 (talk) 21:19 and 21:26, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • "leave it out of my article. And don't lecture me about not owning the article." Do I really need to say anymore other than highlight what you just said yourself? Would appear that my suggestion to read WP:OWN was a good suggestion. As for the other points you raised, well they could have been dealt with differently than completely removing what I wrote. But whatever, I'll reply to them some other day when I'm not running so late to leave for town. Mathmo Talk 08:20, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you absolutely must include this arcane factoid in the article, why not create a new paragraph to mention it, and please make sure the grammar is perfect (remember this is an encyclopedia for which we're writing...if you're not a native speaker please have someone check it). Please also put it somewhere where it doesn't interrupt the flow. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.46.221.128 (talk) 21:26, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think your behaviour is really that appropriate seeing as the article is pure original research since it hasn't been referenced. Yes, Mathmo added something which was not sourced so there was no way to tell if it was appropriate or not. But the whole article relies on one very poor source. --TrollHistorian 21:38, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead and helped the flow or the evolution of the article by indicating all the lines which need reliable sources and are unreferenced. --TrollHistorian 21:41, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article is terrible[edit]

No, seriously, it is. It'd be better as a stub than the baseless opinion it currently is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.231.202.210 (talk) 18:55, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will be overhauling this article eventually. In Correct (talk) 11:00, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

1980s?[edit]

This style of men's shirts was popular in the seventies (from first-hand experience). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.179.5.126 (talk) 19:04, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure that these styles have been around for quite some time, I've seen them in old movies. I'm sure belly-revealing clothing has been around forever, but it is indeed difficult to find sources on these things. But then again, nothing before the '80s exists on Wikipedia, right? ;D --68.5.64.68 21:34, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article, if it's going to continue to exist, really needs the support of a rigorous image debate. Show me pictures of men and women wearing these tops from different eras. There were midriff-baring tops being worn by women, even in the rural/conservative south, in the 1940s/50s (I have come across pictures doing research in my journalistic career, though I'm not sure I could scan since the material is in private historical archives, and the research was obviously unrelated to this topic). My sense is that the male adoption of this fashion is a minor derivative, but the article makes it sound like a major trend. I could be wrong, however. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.167.177.14 (talk) 02:44, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done I found a source confirming it was worn during the 1970s! In Correct (talk) 11:48, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

article vague[edit]

I find the start of the article to be unclear: "Crop tops .. are T-shirts or blouses that are cut off, resulting in the exposure of some of the wearer's abdomen. The halfshirt (or bellyshirt) is a variety of shirt that is cut off from the bottom of the chest." What is the difference between crop tops and halfshirts? Do halfshirts NOT show off some of the wearer's abdomen? Are halfshirts/bellyshirts cut off at half-way between shoulders and waist and thus show off someone's entire abdomen? --EarthFurst (talk) 02:21, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Do the following images show people in crop tops? [1], [2], [3]. Holly 16:05, 29 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.199.146.175 (talk)

Yes, picture 2 and and 3 are crop tops. picture 3 is also a Gypsy top. Picture 1 is a muffin top.--86.26.73.109 (talk) 09:51, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photo Caption[edit]

"A cold, braless model wearing crop top" Why are the words "cold" and "braless" included? This seems unnecessary and irrelevant, and it draws attention away from the garment and to the fact that the model's nipples are visible through it. Was this wording chosen for some good purpose? If so, someone can revert the caption to what it is at the time of my writing. If not, I'm going change it to the more neutral and appropriate (for the content of the article) "A model wearing a crop top". Section Types: One Missing[edit]

From what I can tell by looking at the photos in the Types section, one type is clearly missing, the loose crop top. In all of the current sample images, the bottom of the top isn't loose. Some sample images of the loose crop top: [4][5][6][7] --82.170.113.123 (talk) 21:05, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Section: Modesty[edit]

This section seems wholly unnecessary. Modesty in regards to crop tops is not a significant aspect of the clothing itself outside of modesty being the general purpose of all clothing. I feel like it either needs to be rewritten or deleted. I am in full favour if it being deleted outright. It's not important to understanding the clothing. Male version?[edit]

Do males ever wear these, or at least something similar? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.186.22.193 (talk) 17:26, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Something similar" would be a sleeveless athletic shirt but an actual half shirt that expose navel by men have not been accepted after the 1980s. I will be adding Ezekiel Elliott who is a very recent occurrence of a complete male half shirt (which has been banned yet again). In Correct (talk) 10:59, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

REAL "Crop-Tops" are NOT rolled up or Cut-off T-Shirts or way-too-small tank-tops[edit]

A rolled-up or cut-off T-Shirt is not a "Crop-top" - it is a "T-Shirt". It is designed and sold as a T-Shirt. It is not designed advertised and sold as a "Crop-Top" A way-too-small tank top is not a "Crop-top -it is a "Tank-top". It is designed and sold as a Tank-Top. It is not designed, advertised and sold as a "Crop-Top." Calling T-Shirts and Tank tops "crop-tops" is like putting a glove on your foot and calling it a sock. Ask any person who sees those photos what they are wearing and they would reply: a rolled up or cut-off T-shirt or a Tank-top - No one would say "crop-top." The photo of the woman with the beige "crop-top" exemplifies a garment specifically designed as a "Crop-top". The photo of the woman wearing the white garment can also be considered a crop-top, but is more-than-likely called and marketed under other names. So the best and most accurate photo for this subject is the woman wearing the beige crop-top. The photos of rolled-up or cut-up T-Shirts, and a way-too-small tank-tops should be deleted.Glenn Francis (talk) 09:43, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted you. The lede makes no demand that a crop top has to meet your own criteria, merely that it "is high enough to expose the waist, navel, or some of the midriff"
I would counter that your image of Woman wearing a beige crop top is even less of a crop top... Chaheel Riens (talk) 13:23, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Word salad since January[edit]

In removing unsourced material, maybe you should be more careful not to produce sections like "While pop singers such as Britney Spears In the 2010s, the crop top experienced a revival due to the popularity of 1990s nostalgia fashion." --79.202.110.26 (talk) 11:19, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
