Much of the previous content of this article appeared to be unlikely, to say the least. Since all of it was unreferenced, and it was impossible to tell the factual from the dubious, I've simply reduced the content of this article to a stub. Please feel free to build the article up again, using material which is supported by references to verifiable, reliable third party sources. -- The Anome (talk) 09:28, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Garden Halls[edit]

Does anyone know when the term "Garden Halls" was introduced? Certainly in 1983, this term was not used and each of the 3 halls of residence was separately managed. By the latter 2000's, they were centrally managed under the collective name. 81.187.1.83 (talk) 16:29, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

I was one of the first group of students to occupy Commonwealth Hall; I'd applied to it when accepted by KCL (Physics) in 1961, though it did not open until January 1962. I shared one of those scarce but popular end of block rooms (high up, but floor unremembered) with two bedrooms sharing a spacious common area between with desks, chairs etc. It had fine views down Marchmont St to the Russell Square tube station and became a popular spot for other students to watch events; Jimmy Saville frequently spent time in the Green Café (cheap Italian) with his E-type parked outside, and the street closed down as police, slowly, slowly talked down a threatened suicide on a roof roughly opposite the GC. We were young and a had a lot to learn.

The rooms had no ensuite toilets or bathrooms; those were a common facility halfway down each corridor, rather public school style, though hot water was available. On the other hand, those who assigned rooms had looked carefully at student,s backgrounds. One of those next door was from my old school and the other was a post graduate Oxford undergraduate from a home town close to mine. I shared the room with a chap deeply concerned about a facial disfigurement; membership of our quartet, I hope, helped him to realise that it did not trouble others as it troubled him.

At the time, most of us understood "Commonwealth" to refer to the remnants of empire; was there really a man of that name? It seems unlikely. [citation needed]

As a regular Wiki editor (mostly on WikiProject:aviation), I appreciate that these notes are of no use in this article but suggest that it might be worth seeking more reliable sources; several cites do not seem relevant and some are dead links.TSRL (talk) 22:34, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
