Pruning list, finding references[edit]

This article has been tagged with "references needed" for over a year. I'd suggest pruning the list of bands to those that have achieved significant fame or had a substantial influence on the genre, and explain that influence rather than just list the names. Right now it seems to be a list of any band that's performed a comedic rock song. After pruning, it would be a lot more manageable to substantiate the material with references, as the less significant bands are much harder to find mentioned by a reliable source. -Agyle 01:31, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Performed a general clean up and pruned some extraneous info. Added some more recent comedy rock acts. Also removed a list of bands that are not comedy acts. Jtsterling (talk) 20:39, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I put the list of bands back up and added a couple to it. The bands aren't 'comedy rock' bands, per se, but they do perform 'comedy rock' songs.... I think examples of songs might need to be given. Jtsterling (talk) 20:59, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Added citations to Dethklok and straightened a few other things out. Jtsterling (talk) 21:21, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for article[edit]

There are so many styles of comedy rock. It might be good to discuss the different approaches of acts like Dread Zeppelin and Beatallica or GWAR. Jtsterling (talk) 07:16, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've done a little more tidying up and the article seems to be getting a little more solid. Jtsterling (talk) 07:23, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Recent changes[edit]

Replaced The Coasters as an example of Comedy-Rock because they were more of a Rhythm and Blues group. Added Sheb Wooley in their place because of the great success he had with his Comedy Rock song in 1958. In short, he seems like a better example. Should Camper Van Beethoven be mentioned? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.189.106.158 (talk) 04:18, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not necessarily. Dogtownclown (talk) 23:06, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Band Names For Promotional Purposes[edit]

I've noticed that people seem to enjoy adding their band names, or names of bands they want to promote, to this article. I've just removed a few (yet again). Keep an eye on the short lists of currently popular comedy acts mentioned in the article. Example: people will add a relatively unknown band to a list that includes Frank Zappa, Tenacious D, & Flight of the Conchords. This does not improve the article and is completely unnecessary. Genre[edit]

Can anyone provide some evidence that there is a genre of rock music that is called comedy rock? There do not seem to be any sources that do this in the article.--SabreBD (talk) 00:17, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nearly all retailers I've checked have "Comedy Rock" listed as a genre: this might be a first step in establishing that it is in fact a recognized genre.

Unfortunately retail sites are not a reliable source. I was really looking for some verifiable music criticism or scholarly publishing.--SabreBD (talk) 11:17, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just spent a couple minutes researching (will do more soon): The "All Music Guide to Rock: The Definitive Guide to Rock, Pop, and Soul" By Vladimir Bogdanov, Chris Woodstra, Stephen Thomas Erlewine has "Comedy Rock" listed as a genre, example on page 126. Added a couple citations to the entry today. Dogtownclown (talk) 00:23, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

subgenres[edit]

Shouldn't Comedy punk be it's own genre? St. Jimmy (talk) 06:08, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
