Surname?[edit]

Clare lived at precisely the time when surnames began to be hereditary. It is difficult to decide whether "Hätzlerin" should be treated as a surname in the modern sense. Should we sort her "Hätzlerin, Clara"? I don't know, but the question is independent of whether the category also includes modern people. We do not sort Nicholas Cusanus as "Cusanus, Nicholas" for Category:German theologians but as "Nicholas Cusanus" for Category:15th century mathematicians, that's a silly idea. dab (𒁳) 16:05, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
