Big science[edit]

I do not feel that the Nüsslein-Volhard/Wieschaus screen was 'big science' i.e. involving a large number of people not a small group, and extremely expensive. Obviously it was very influential, and in its ambition to find and classify all the embryonic lethal genes it was indeed a significant change towards a more systematic approach to biology. However I understand that the screen were essentially undertaken by four people (Nüsslein-Volhard, Wieschaus, Gerd Jürgens and Hildegard Kluding [1], and was not massively costly, so was not a big science project as commonly understood. Surely big science did not reach basic molecular biology until the physical map construction/genome sequencing projects? Celefin (talk) 11:44, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rated start class for the following reasons:
  • No photograph
  • Lacks information on education and career before 1985
  • Lacks references
  • Some information on research interests, but could be expanded
  • Lacks appropriate subheadings and reordering might be helpful
  • External link present which could be used to expand article

Awards and honors[edit]

I've added some citations to this section but I haven't yet found verified sources for all of the listed prizes so I haven't removed the Maintenance Template. I'll keep coming back until I can get this properly referenced (or someone else does). Feel free to join in and check what I've done, thanks! - Lozmatron (talk) 15:17, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
