Title[edit]

The Complete Peerage lists as Earl of Devonshire, like the Cavendish Earldom. Since he is not listed under Earl of Devon, which is now held to have existed at the time, this would seem preferable. Septentrionalis 17:25, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He is much better known as Baron Mountjoy.

The EB 1911 says "Earl of Devonshire". I can't find any support for this text, which I have cut from the article:

This title was granted as a recreation of the old Earldom of Devon, held by the Courtenays, which was then believed to be extinct. In 1831, the House of Lords decided that the Courtenay Earldom had existed de jure for the preceding two and a half centuries. To avoid making this situation more confusing, Mountjoy has usually been called the Earl of Devonshire.

Barring any convincing evidence otherwise, I'm going with the Complete Peerage and the EB.

Rename[edit]

Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(names_and_titles)#British_peerage states: "When individuals held more than one peerage and are best known by a title other than their highest one, use the interim one."

On that basis, I believe this article should be moved to Charles Blount, 8th Baron Mountjoy. Do others agree? - PKM (talk) 16:40, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely agree! He is hardly ever called Earl of Devonshire as opposed to Lord Mountjoy; he got the title so late in his life, and then there are the famous Cavendish Devonshires...I hope it's o.k. I removed the birth and death dates of Sir Christopher Blount from the article text; his birth date is typically problematic, it seems (in his article and similar categories I've changed it alreay). I have no issues with removing unverified dates.
