"The Chams are considered Malays and the language they speak is understood by the Malays."? No. those are just close languages. forgive my editing inexperience. I wish to add to the discussion, but don't know how. Here is what I would like to add:

My son is studying Cham in Vietnam this month and he states that Cham is closer to Hawaiian and Indian and Oceania. He states that the 2000 year old history dates back from the trade routes of India through the Asian peninsula. UNESCO has designated a site near Ho chi min city to study this dying language as of 2012. The Cham are not Muslim, but worship Buddha. Dave Paulson will get his doctorate degree in anthropology in 2015 for studying dying languages (Anthropology major at Temple Univ. in PA.), and his major is the Cham language. The Cham people were the instrumental helpers for the Americans in the Vietnam war. That is why the Vietnam do not like the Cham ppl. Their 2 languages have nothing in common. That is the contributing factor for why Cham is dying. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mpau0516 (talkcontribs) 00:13, 11 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cham Language[edit]

Is there no WP article on the Cham Language? I would like to see one. I'm not familiar enough with the language to write an original article, but if nobody else does it first, I can gleen some info from various sources and at least start a stub.--WilliamThweatt 23:13, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I created the Cham language article last week. Added language infobox and basic info as a stub. Currently working on brief sections describing history, dialects, phonology and grammar. Maybe somebody else will be able to eloborate once I get the rest of it up.--WilliamThweatt 15:46, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cham is not closed to Indonesians or Malay[edit]

The Cham language have gone through considerable changes, it is now more simmiliar to Khmer and Vietnamese when heard becuase it is more monosyllabic or sesquillabic than a typical Malay language. Most Cham words changed from being polysyllabic to being clustered Monosyllabic. CanCanDuo 02:49, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

when classifying languages a distinction is made between similarities that are a result of actual historical links, and similarities that are a result of unrelated languages influencing each other. In the case of Cham, although its phonology and grammar might not be very similar to Malay now due to the influence of nearby Mon-Khmer languages, historical linguistics has shown that the two languages do share a distant common ancestor. That is what is meant by it being said to be a part of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. --Krsont 23:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bani Islam[edit]

What is Bani Islam? Saimdusan Talk|Contribs 07:16, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have learned about history and culture of Vietnam and Bani Islam is syncretist religion of Sunni Islam, Hinduism, Theravada Buddhist, Aminism and Ancestor Worship! I have seen a mosque of Bani islam and it looks like a Therevada Buddhist pagoda but its inside is empty!

Do you have a source for "Bani Islam"? Saimdusan Talk|Contribs 05:11, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Angelo.

I've lived In Cho Lon, too, long ago, in the 40s 50s. Now, as an old man ("Lao" or "Ong Gia") I've spent 6 months in a Cham Bani family of Tan Chau, by Chau Doc for a deeper work of anthropologist and political scientist. The result is a paper in French on the controversial Cham Bani Islam. I may send it to you, attached on an email My address is "[email protected]".

The main feature is matrilinearity with transgressions of Islam orthodoxy.

In politology, they are better set in Vietnam than native amerindians in Canada. Until now, there's been no way of forced assimilation and integration to the vast majority of "Kinh" ("Viet" from Cantonese "Yueh").Go to French Wiki: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royaume_du_Champ%C3%A2#Les_colonisations_du_Vi.C3.AAt_Nam_et_le_colonialisme_vietnamien

Two kinds of Cham- the Hindu Cham Balamon and the heterodox Muslim Cham Bani, with the Bani founded by Po Ro Me, a former Cham King. Hinduism, Animism, and Islam are all incorporated within the heterodox Bani Muslims- they consume alcohol, have a patriarchal society, have Quranic Islamic inspired tales and regard pork as haram. In Malaysia, Cambodia, and the Mekong, Orthodox Islam has gained ground among the Cham Bani. Cham New Year is called "Rija Nukan" but due to the Communist Vietnamese strict controls over minority religious celebrations, the manner in which is celebrated is strict.[1]

Cham Bani French language documentary, and a Vietnamese langauge play about a Bani girl and Cham boy "Cham Forbidden Love".[2]

The Chams are made out of three groups- Cham Hindus, heterodox Muslim Cham Bani, and orthodox Muslim Cham Islam who adhere to Sunni Islam, orthodox Muslim Chams live in the far southwestern area in the Mekong Delta (Binh Phuoc, Long Khanh, Ho Chi Minh City, An Giang, Chau Doc, and Tay Ninh) while the Hindus and heterodox Cham Bani live in central middle Vietnam in Phan Ri and Phan Rang.[3] [4]

The Buddhist religion was once practiced in Champa alongside the Shiva centrict Brahmanism (Hinduism).[5]

Hinduism in champa[edit]

Hey, is there any more info on the type of hinduism practiced there? thanks, domDomsta333 (talk) 13:12, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inaccurate information?[edit]

The article writes that the Chams are descendants of the Cambodians and are a Mon-Khmer people with non-Mongoloid eyes, tall, fair and so on. Although it is cited, much of what is said contradicts modern data. The Chams are neither descendants of Cambodians or are they Mon-Khmer, it is fairly well agreed upon that they are descendants of Austronesian seafarers. The rest of what is said is also highly questionable, like unproven eugenics. Do anyone favor re-examining the article? Thegreatesttypeofangry (talk) 16:37, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed -- much this article cites pseudoscientific and mythological claims about Kambojas and such. It's ridiculous for the article that states that the Cham are Austronesian people to late describe them as "Scythianized" (i.e. from the shores of the Black Sea).118.71.11.88 (talk) 09:34, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the nonsense. "It is fairly well agreed upon that they are descendants of Austronesian seafarers." Indeed. The Chams probably originated in Borneo. --Folantin (talk) 07:57, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Balamons[edit]

The article contradicst itself. It says Balamon are actually Brahmins of the Cham people where as later it says they are kashtriyas. Where is the citation for both ? Taprobanus (talk) 22:05, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The relationship between Cham and Aceh?[edit]

I still don't understand the relationship between Cham and Aceh. Where did the two groups come from? Borneo? I don't know. But after reading this forum post, I now tend to think a "sea-faring" Malayo-Polynesian dialect became a koine language for many people in Hindu-ized parts of ancient Vietnam and Cambodia. Utsul[edit]

The Utsul language is more related to the Chamic Montagnard Jarai and Rhade langauges than it is to mainstream Cham.

post conflict advocacy and persecution[edit]

Cham organizations and activists coopeate with Khmer Krom and Montagnard organizations against the Vietnamese government over human rights issues and minority rights. The Cham activists Musa Porome and Qasim Tu are particularly active in advocacy for Cham rights in Vietnam.

Vietnamese fears of Cham autonomy over South China sea disputes[edit]

Vietnam fears that if the issue of Cham relations to the disputed south China sea islands are brought up, Cham would demand atuonomy from Vietnam since they were violently conquered by the Vietnamese. Vietnam has put more restrictions of Cham culture and customs recently.

I have several doubts on the veridicity of this article. First of all, as it is on the page right now, it sounds like the plundering and destroying of Cham temples is going on right now, which is not true. It's also false that most of Cham live in houses of mud. The article quoted makes a wrong connection between the Montagnards' uprisings and the Cham. I think this article should not be quoted like that.Suturn (talk) 07:36, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cham People in Vietnam Today[edit]

I agree with Saturn.

This whole section should be removed. It's not correct. Cham people live in the same kinds of houses as everyone else in Vietnam, not mud houses. The Vietnamese Government is not systematically trying to destroy Cham culture and religion. It's always a worry when the only reference is to a couple of self style 'activists' who don't actually live in the country. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aussiegrey (talkcontribs) 04:01, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The section also contain inaccuracy, Song Luy is literally "Sông Lũy" in plain Vietnamese for the "Lũy river", its not a capital nor is a city of the Cham. Also there was no invasion in 1832, they were already a proper semi-autonomous province of the Nguyen Dynasty by that time. Quangsp (talk) 14:52, 22 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reposting[edit]

source. Just reposting. Komitsuki (talk) 13:08, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Kampong Cham[edit]

Just a little clarification. Kampong Cham is not derived from "port of the Chams". The original name of the province is Kampong RongChaum which literally translates as "Port of Patient". The name was shortened by the vernacular pronunciation as Kampong "Cham" but it is a mistaken notion that the province was named after Cham refugees from nearby Champa. Kampong Cham contain the Angkorean site of Angkor Bachey as well as Banteay Prey Nokor and many other major pre-angkorean Khmer settlements all predating the Cham movement into the area. The Chams neither founded nor were they the majority of the area so this naming proposal is highly unlikely with many archaeological and historical evidence against it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikiname12345 (talkcontribs) 15:26, 11 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why are there so few Cham people today?[edit]

As you can see in the side bar at the beginning of the article, the total population of Chams today, including those in Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Hainan (Utsuls), and the overseas diaspora, numbers just 400,000 - Not even half a million. It's hard to believe that an ethnic group this small once held domain over the majority of modern central and south Vietnam, especially considering that the Kinh (ethnic Vietnamese) today number over 90 million people. So, does that imply that the majority of Cham people were assimilated into the Kinh? The article states that many Cham who resettled in Malaysia were assimilated into the local Malay population, but it's not clear whether or not they are part of the 10,000 Cham that reside in Malaysia listed in the side bar. Many Cham were also killed, but I doubt the massacre was enough to make them such a small minority. --124.119.126.206 (talk) 13:20, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Uncited[edit]

I found this within the article and noticed that it wasn't properly cited or lacked a citation--would anyone know the point of reference? I looked online but the only thing that was word for word or even similar was from a Facebook page of someone.

"In the 1960s various movements emerged calling for the creation of a separate Cham state in Vietnam. The Liberation Front of Champa (FLC – Le Front pour la Libération de Cham) and the Front de Libération des Hauts plateaux dominated. The latter group sought greater alliance with other hilltribe minorities." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monruv (talkcontribs) 08:23, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence beginning, "In the 1960s..." is found verbatim on a blog associated with a tattoo parlor. Hardly what I'd call a RS. Dgndenver (talk) 20:51, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

History sections[edit]

I think the section names used in the History chapter need some work, they often don't really reflect the paragraphs below or include a lot of other information. At other times, the information is not very chronological. Does anyone else agree? Glennznl (talk) 09:48, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, some of the information needs to be reorganized. There is also considerable overlap with History of Champa, so much of the first sub-sections can be trimmed and given a main-hatnote to History of Champa. –Austronesier (talk) 14:34, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Austronesier: I just shuffled the content and made some better sections. I did not delete or move anything yet. There is overlap with both History of Champa, History of the Cham–Vietnamese wars and Champa. We will need to take a close look on how to clean it all up. Glennznl (talk) 15:53, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Austronesier: the Martial art section looks extremely dubious and low quality to me. I think it would be best to remove it, do you agree? Glennznl (talk) 16:00, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Glennznl: Forgot to answer...yes, I agree. Even if parts of it are valid, this is undue here, and only merits a mention in Silat#Minangkabau. It is quite understandable that Indonesian and Malaysian editors are interested in Cham/Champa-related topics, but sometimes forget that information about the Cham needs to be significant on its own, and not just because it is interesting from a Indonesian/Malaysian perspective. –Austronesier (talk) 11:06, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Austronesier: I found the same material under Pencak_silat#Minangkabau, so no knowledge is lost from Wiki in that regard. Glennznl (talk) 11:39, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Austronesier, Glennznl, and Enilseine: This section also claims that the ancestors of the Chams were from South Asia, rather than Southeast Asia. Is this an error? Jarble (talk) 02:01, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jarble: Well, that's quite a hodgepodge of modern solid scholarship and weird outdated musing which goes back to this edit[1]. I suggest to restore the earlier version of the paragraph. Maybe it should be revised to be less Austronesian-focused, and also mention the fact that Chamic culture is a blend of maritime Austronesian and mainland Austrasiatic elements, as witnessed from linguistic and extra-linguistic evidence. –Austronesier (talk) 21:23, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What is Chams costume?[edit]

Cham people's role in the Vietnam War[edit]

There are some inaccuracy regarding North Vietnam's relations with ethnic minorities. While it is true that North Vietnam were advantaged by past connection of imperial Vietnamese dynasties, the Cham people were not pro-Vietnamese and organizations like FULRO and Champa Liberation Front both proclaimed their open anti-Vietnamese, regardless North or South. It is necessary to pay attention. HiddenFace101 (talk) 09:43, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Missing men[edit]

This article has several images of ethnic Cham women in traditional clothes or doing traditional Cham dances but absolutely none of any male ethnic Cham, perhaps someone close to the regions where the Cham live can photograph a few men and boys in traditional Cham clothes and add them to this article. --Donald Trung (talk) 23:28, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Extended-confirmed-protected edit request on 11 March 2024[edit]

The article refers to Utsul as a language spoken by Cham people. This is just factually wrong. Utsul or Utsat is also known as "Hainan Cham," but the speakers of this language are NOT Cham. They are "Huihui" or "Utsul" people, who are Chamic, but NOT Cham. The reference to Utsul needs to be removed. JaLikei (talk) 19:07, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Jamedeus (talk) 19:19, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
