Birthplace: New York City vs. Dublin[edit]

Hello fellow Wikipedians. The series of good-faith edits summarized here adjusted some (but not all) of the information in this article to assert that Gibbons was born in Dublin, Ireland, rather than in New York City. These edits were based at least in part on this Feb. 2015 article in the Irish Times.

Now, if there are sources that asserting his Dublin birth that can be shown to outweigh the sources asserting his New York birth (or vice versa) then I think we need to review this article top to bottom and make sure that we have changed everything we need to change, with proper referencing.

We currently have a Notes section that points to the ABC Clio reference work Ireland and the Americas that says that "According to most sources... ...Gibbons was born on March 23, 1893 in Dublin, Ireland" but goes on to mention Scott Eyman's biography of Louis B. Mayer which gives Gibbons birth as being in Brooklyn in 1890.

I am open to various courses of action; We could leave the article much as it is now, or, we could add in some further explanation of which sources give 1890/Brooklyn and which give 1893/Dublin.

But regardless of what we do, I think we need to take a step back, see what we can talk out here, and address the article and citations as a whole. Thanks to all for their important contributions to WP. KConWiki (talk) 01:24, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
