Proposed Edit[edit]

Carter Ledyard & Milburn no longer has an office in Washington, D.C. I should disclose that I am a current attorney associate of the firm working out of the firm's New York office (which is properly listed). I would direct you to the firm's website and contact information (http://www.clm.com/contactForm.cfm), but I understand that you prefer secondary sources. If you cannot accept the proposed change on the basis of a primary source, please advise as to what other sources would be satisfactory. Thanks very much. My proposed changes are as follows:

Remove reference to Washington, D.C. in the second sentence and replace it with reference to the firm's current New York locations, so that it reads as:

Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP is a New York City law firm. It has more than 100 attorneys with two offices in lower and midtown Manhattan, New York.[1]

Done @Paradigm62: But if you can find more Independent and reliable sources that reported about your activities the whole article would've been improved.  — Ammarpad (talk) 04:52, 9 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Edit[edit]

I am an associate at Carter, Ledyard & Milburn LLP proposing the following changes to update this Wikipedia page and to correct certain information regarding the firm's number of attorneys, practice areas, and adding a notable alumni. My changes are as follows:

In the introductory paragraph, I propose the second sentence should read, "It has about 100 attorneys with two offices in lower and midtown Manhattan, New York." This change more accurately reflects the current number of attorneys.

In the Present Day section, I would like to add the following as an opening sentence: "Today, the firm counsels clients on a range of topics, including condemnation, corporate and finance matters, cross-border transactions, cybersecurity, employment, compensation and benefits matters, environmental law and land use, financial services, insolvency and creditors’ rights, intellectual property, litigation and disputes (including fiduciary litigation), maritime law, real estate, tax, tax-exempt organizations, trusts and estates, white collar crimes and investigations, and art law (including how donated art works can be handled)." This change reflects the full range of the firm's practice areas. The proposed change is consistent with and supported by the facts as described on the following website [2]. The current first sentence in the Present Day section should be revised as follows: "The firm advises corporate clients on variety of matters including restructurings, financings, joint ventures, private equity, hedge funds, mezzanine debt and distressed funds in their investment activities." This revision merely adjusts the sentence to blend with the proposed first sentence for this section, so no additional citation is necessary.

In the notable alumni section, I would like to add the following bullet point: "Margo Brodie, a judge of the United States District Court of the Eastern District of New York and first Afro-Caribbean-born federal judge in the United States." Judge Brodie's Wikipedia page at [3] references her association with the firm. The following website also supports the assertion that she is the first Afro-Caribbean-born federal judge in the United States [4].

  1. Judge Brodie was added to the list of alumni.
  2. Those listed under alumni but without references were removed.
  3. The request pertaining to the "Present Day" section submits as reference, the firm itself. While this would not normally constitute a problem, in this case already-accepted second and third party sourced information is proposed to be replaced by information substantiated by a single source. To compensate for the imbalance kindly provide second or third party sources.
  4. The attorney census of approximately 100: this proposed value is unchanged from the standing value.
  5. Information on founding partners was moved from the lead to the main article.

Carter Ledyard and Milburn COI Edits[edit]

Moved from Talk:User talk:Spintendo#Carter Ledyard and Milburn COI Edits
 – Spintendo ᔦᔭ 01:41, 27 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spintendo,

Thank you for your prompt response to our requested edits.

I wanted to again request the addition of the firm's complete set of practice areas to the page. I previously requested that the following sentence be added as the first sentence in the Present Day section of the page, "Today, the firm counsels clients on a range of topics, including condemnation, corporate and finance matters, cross-border transactions, cybersecurity, employment, compensation and benefits matters, environmental law and land use, financial services, insolvency and creditors’ rights, intellectual property, litigation and disputes (including fiduciary litigation), maritime law, real estate, tax, tax-exempt organizations, trusts and estates, white collar crimes and investigations, and art law (including how donated art works can be handled)." This list reflects a comprehensive list of the firm's practice areas. The current list is narrowly focused on matters we handle for corporate clients only. The source we provided for this sentence is [1], a link to Vault's website describing the firm. Vault is a website that ranks and provide reviews of companies in a variety of industries, including law, banking, and consulting. Their website compiles information about employers in these different areas to provide a resource for job seekers to learn more about potential employers. This site should be considered a second or third party source containing information about the firm. The current form of the firm's Wikipedia site cites to an outdated version of Vault's guide to New York law firms at [2]. Our link is to the current Vault website discussing the firm. I am essentially updating an existing third party source. We maintain the use of the other third party sources as well.

I would also like to edit the current first sentence in the Present Day section to align with our proposed change above. I request the sentence to be revised to read, "The firm advises corporate clients on variety of matters including restructurings, financings, joint ventures, private equity, hedge funds, mezzanine debt and distressed funds in their investment activities." The requested change is stylistic in nature to ensure the text flows properly and eliminates redundant topics already listed under our proposed new first sentence for this section. the sources for this sentence should remain the same.

Thanks.

Hello Jlpeters and thank you for your message. As far as the listing of practice areas, the infobox is equipped to handle this quite well, using the practice_areas parameter, where all the major areas could be listed. If the firm handles all of the major areas, the parameter would be set to "General Practice". Let me know if that is an option for you. If not, I can re-open the edit request asking for the information to be displayed in the main text which another editor will review. Please advise. Thank you! Thank you for your help thus far, I appreciate it. I would also appreciate it if you would re-open the edit request for another editor to review as you offered. The practice areas parameter is already set to General Practice.

COI Edit Request[edit]

I am an associate at Carter, Ledyard & Milburn LLP again requesting the following changes to update this Wikipedia page and to correct certain information regarding the firm's number of attorneys and practice areas. These changes were previously requested and partially implemented. My changes are as follows:

In the introductory paragraph, I propose the second sentence should read, "It has about 100 attorneys with two offices in lower and midtown Manhattan, New York." This change more accurately reflects the current number of attorneys, which fluctuates around 100 attorneys, but is not currently "more than 100" attorneys. this change also aligns the main text of the page with the Infobox which states the firm has "about 100" attorneys.

The proposed change is consistent with and supported by the facts as described on the following website [1]. The Vault website cited here is a third party website that independently compiles information on companies in certain industries, including the legal field. The cited website is an updated version of the current citation #7 on the Wiki page.

Notes

  1. ^ As this number is an approximate, the wording has been changed to read approximately.
  2. ^ The Vault is reimbursed for these services and as such, is not a reliable third party source.
  3. ^ Your request was not specific enough. COI edit requests must include complete and specific descriptions of the request, that is, specify what text should be removed and a verbatim copy of the text that should replace it. "Please change X" is not acceptable and will be rejected; the request must be of the form "Please change X to Y". For example, your request currently states "Please change to Y" and then alludes to where X is, but does not explicitly state what X is (i.e., describing it instead as "The current first sentence..").

Request edit II[edit]

Please find below revised versions of the requested edits.

Please revise the current first sentence in the Present Day section, which currently reads "Today, the firm advises corporate clients on a range of topics, including mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, financings, and joint ventures and private equity, hedge funds, mezzanine, debt and distressed funds in their investment activities, how donated art works can be handled," as follows "The firm advises corporate clients on variety of matters including restructurings, financings, joint ventures, private equity, hedge funds, mezzanine debt and distressed funds in their investment activities." This revision merely adjusts the sentence to blend with the proposed first sentence for this section (see below), so no additional citation is necessary.

In the Present Day section, please add the following as an opening sentence: "Today, the firm counsels clients on a range of topics, including condemnation, corporate and finance matters, cross-border transactions, employment, compensation and benefits matters, environmental law and land use, financial services, insolvency and creditors’ rights, intellectual property, litigation and disputes (including fiduciary litigation), maritime law, real estate, tax, tax-exempt organizations, trusts and estates, white collar crimes and investigations, and art law (including how donated art works can be handled)." This change reflects the full range of the firm's practice areas. The proposed change is consistent with and supported by practice areas described on the following website [1]

Notes

  1. ^ This duty to inform the public about the labyrinthine areas of law covered by the firm is the firm's responsibility, not Wikipedia's.[1] Merely being true, or even verifiable, does not automatically make something suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia.[2] Articles should not become a complete exposition of all possible details, but rather, a summary of accepted knowledge regarding their subjects.[3] The listing of every possible type of law covered by the firm does not render the article's information in summary form.

Response to third opinion request:
I have to go with Spintendo on this one. A list of all the various subdivisions of an aspect of law is not helpful - indeed, I'd say it's not ideal marketing for the firm. If the main aspects of law covered are listed, then a consumer can more easily, in my opinion, actually determine the firms relevance, as well as being more encyclopedic. As it is, I haven't absorbed the majority of that list. Jlpeters213, I'd suggest pruning that list to general areas of law, then make another request for insertion.
