Origin?[edit]

The origin part for the names seems suspect. If Cambodians only started using family names during the colonial era and many family names were the first name of the grandfather, and Khmer first names back then were mostly monosyllabic, the likelihood they would coincide with Chinese is higher? For example, ខៀវ just means blue/green in Khmer. What is the rationale of connecting it to Chinese/Vietnamese? Should this section even be included without sourcing?

While there are undoubtedly Cambodians with Chinese origin surnames, the coincidence of monosyllabic patronymics in Khmer with Chinese words makes most of the etymology suspect. See for example "Tat"/តាត: this name is attested in Khmer epigraphy in the 17th century as the second syllable of Pang Tat/ប៉ាង តាត, the author of the poem ល្បើកអង្គរ. While it might also be a Chinese surname common among Chinese Cambodians, the similarity is likely coincidental. See also "Duong"/ដួង with Vietnamese Duong, which coincides in spelling only because of transliteration into Latin and are pronounced differently in Khmer and Vietnamese. I have removed this section for now. Please source the etymology before adding not just by linking the name to similar sounding forms in other languages but by tracing the spelling/form of the Khmer name historically when possible. Places to start is to look at epigraphic attestations of names in Old Khmer inscriptions, loanwords from Thai (e.g. កែវ), known historical ties to other naming customs (e.g. the use of Vietnamese naming conventions among the Khmer Krom or Arabic names among the Cham) Kunkanjrong (talk) 00:46, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hmong?[edit]

This mention seems unneccesary as Hmongs are not one of the tribal groups that resided in Cambodia. Bublumbubu (talk) 04:34, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Biased Policing of Name Etymologies[edit]

Hi All,

I have made the mistake of making a claim about a certain surname (Ros) without a reliable source. I am aware of what I did was wrong. However, I think that this sort of policing should be carried out with all the surnames listed here as this page may give off the wrong idea to all viewers that Cambodian surnames are either from Sanskrit or Chinese. None of these surnames, if any of you noticed, are not sourced. So I ask all editors to please not make any biased editing just because it doesn't fit your narrative. Thank you. --NewEditor, 05/10/2018 9:04 pm (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.252.126.107 (talk)

We are all volunteers here. Most people tend more quickly to whatever pops up on their watchlist (i.e. recent changes) and then give more detailed attention to whole articles later as time allows. We are all busy irl and edit WP when we have free time. Many people have thousands of pages on their watchlist (I, for example, have over 4000 on mine) which they intend to work on at some point. If there are other pre-existing problems with this particular article, somebody will eventually get to them. Maybe it will even be me...or you. You are more than welcome to be WP:BOLD and help make WP better. Just follow the Core Content Policies, WP:CIVIL and WP:AGF. This is a collaborative project; if you unknowingly make a mistake, somebody will come along and fix it eventually. There are also many venues to seek help from other editors such as WP:Help desk, WP:Teahouse and WP:HELP. Cheers.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 01:07, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
