I just saw this movie for the umpteenth time on TCM (09/06/2014). (Yes, it's one of my guilty pleasures.) But I have never picked up, um, er, a whiff of lesbian overtones in this movie. "Elvira Powell" is a Madam.[edit]

Think about it. She is referred to in the newspaper headline as a "Vice Queen". She remarks to "Harper" about how bad the women look. She gives out rhinestone studded, heart shaped compacts to the women in her cell block. She pays off "Harper" $100 a month. She almost immediately has "Harper" throw "Kitty Stark" into solitary for a month so she can take control of the cell block. She arranges for "Marie Allen" to be picked up at the entrance to the prison by two men in a Cadillac. "Elvira Powell" is not the leader of a ring of two bit shoplifters.
