Is there a comprehensive list[edit]

or does one have to work it out from the Cadw map [1]? KJP1 (talk) 09:01, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • [2] - Is this set complete or a work in progress? — Preceding unsigned comment added by KJP1 (talkcontribs) 09:09, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@KJP1, Not 100% sure, but Cadw has some databases to download here although not easily organised? I tried searching on the map and by clicking "search our records", selecting Parks and Gardens and not entering anything else just straight to search, you get 8 pages of 384 entries? Is this the full list? I clicked export on the map to produce this extensive list of those search results. The gwales book is paperback and released in 2007 so I assume only updated until 2007. DankJae - Impressive! Your 384 total fits neatly with the "just under 400" that Cadw talks about. So I think it may well be complete. It's a pity its not sortable, which would make grouping entries by principal area, and therefore checking, much easier. I know Cadw do a good job, but their records aren't always that user-friendly. And they are very slow to reply to queries; I'm still waiting for a reply to a query about the architects of Piercefield House which I raised 5 years ago. Thanks again and all the best. @KJP1, Well you can use in-browser search to search the document by principal area, i.e. search in page "Monmouthshire" and most highlighted can be of that, although some text also has Monmouthshire, so it will be still manual. The alternative is the slowly transfer the entire 384 list somewhere, could be in this article, and have a sortable column by principal area, happy to help with that. @KJP1, Oh wait, you can use the map to sort by Principal area, and export it. Click "Search our records" → Asset type (Historic Parks & Gardens) → Unitary Authority (e.g. Monmouthshire) → Search → then click Export → all the left column selected above HTML, and you should get a list like this which has 48 entires for Monmouthshire. @DankJae - You're a star! I'd have been even more grateful if I'd seen your second message before I manually went through the 384 entries extracting the Monmouthshire 48! You can see what I'm now attempting, here, User:KJP1/sandbox 5 Monmouthshire gardens. I will certainly need help, if you've time. I need to convert all the Historic England stuff to Cadw and the links don't currently work. Thanks again and all the best. KJP1 (talk) 12:08, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, hopefully you don't need to sweat for the other 21 authorities. Will look at that sandbox. DankJae 12:13, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DankJae - You can see where I’ve got to in the sandbox. The biggest problem that the links don’t work. I suspect the Listed parks and gardens in the East Midlands template I used as a basis is linked in some way to the Historic England database and what is needed is a table that links to the Cadw site. If you have time, could you take a look? I noted your message on your user page, and if you’d rather not get involved in this headache at present, that is absolutely fine. I’m hugely grateful for all the help you and Sventon have given to date. Take care. KJP1 (talk) 18:53, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@KJP1, Hi, you were using the {{English Heritage listed building header}} (and row) templates, therefore it is linked to Historic England's website. There is a {{Cadw listed building header}} (and row) but it has different parameters and is linked to Cadw's listed building section rather than parks and gardens. Therefore I changed it to use {{Historic building header}} and row templates as a sort of temporary solution. Best would be to request a new template like {{Cadw listed park header}} (and row) be made. Not knowledgable of complex templates at this stage, maybe raise a request with the aformentioned templates' creators?
It would be best to see if you can get a new technical template made for Cadw's parks, if you can and it is more similar to {{English Heritage listed building header}} using the same parameters, then my recent edit can be reverted and reformatted to the new template (i.e. simply replace "English Heritage listed building" with "Cadw listed park" in an ideal situation in the future). But if it is not likely a new template is to be made, then my attempt at an alternative solution could stay. But a new template would greatly simplify things. Or another editor could also rework {{Cadw listed building header}} (and row) to also link to parks. DankJae 20:49, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update[edit]

I've gone through the Southern and Mid-Wales Principal Areas, linking where we have an article and listing where we haven't on the relevant Category Talkpage. Very happy to do the same for the North (Angelsey/Gwynedd/Conway/Denbighshire/Flintshire/Wrexham) unless User talk:DankJae, or indeed anyone else, wants to pick it up. At the same time, User:EdwardUK has been working on a template to allow us to build articles on historic parks and gardens in a similar way to those we already have for Listed buildings and scheduled monuments. This will be floated shortly for comment at WikiProject Wales and WikiProject Historic Sites. All in all, some good progress. KJP1 (talk) 14:32, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
