Merger of Gashead into this article[edit]

I think that Gashead should be a section of the main Bristol Rovers article. If you have a look at the suggested layout of football club articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Clubs, it suggests having a supporters section in the main article, and it appears that Gasheads has already been deleted once for not being notable (see User_talk:Rossytzoltan). Noted players[edit]

I think that the noted players section of the article needs a pretty big overhaul. It's for listing the players who have had the biggest impact on the club, so players like Youra Eshaya who never made a first team appearance, and Bobby Zamora who only made four appearances and never scored should be removed. I think that we should try and agree on a list of players on this talk page to be included in the article. We also need to be careful to avoid recentism. The players I would definately remove from the existing list would be:

  • Youra Eshaya
  • Bobby Zamora

Players that I would definately keep on the current list and why:

  • Geoff Bradford - Record goalscorer & capped by England while at Rovers
  • Nigel Martyn - First million pound goalkeeper when sold by Rovers

Possible keeps:

  • Esmond Million - Bribery scandal & banned from football for life
  • Larry Lloyd - I don't know enough about him to comment either way
  • Nathan Ellington - Discovered in non-league and sold for over £1million
  • Jason Roberts - Probably remove, as there have been players that have made a bigger impact
  • Gary Mabbutt - Joint top scorer one season, but most of his achievements were at Tottenham

Players I think that should be added:

  • Stuart Taylor - Most appearances for Rovers by any player
  • Andy Tillson - Record signing and club captain for several years
  • Barry Hayles - Record transfer fee received
  • More from the 1950s and 1970s promotion-winning sides

GA On Hold Justification[edit]

Overall this is a well-written, well referenced article. The only reason I put this on hold is due to the introduction. This excerpt from WP:LEAD (check out the link as well) should help you understand what I'm talking about...

The lead should be capable of standing alone as a concise overview of the article, establishing context, summarizing the most important points, explaining why the subject is interesting or notable...

Noteable Managers[edit]

Paul Trollope must be a noteable manager. In his first full season at the club he took us to two finals winning promotion along the way.

Martin Grzadkowski[edit]

Someone has added the following entry to the 'Notable People from Midsomer Norton' paragraph on the Midsomer Norton page.

"Martin Grzadkowski (footballer), born in 1948 who played for Bristol Rovers, and earned an international cap playing for England Youth against Scotland"

I am trying to verify the accuracy and notability of this entry but can find no reference to Martin Grzadkowski anywhere else. Can anyone confirm that he is a former Bristol Rovers player?

According to the list of Bristol Rovers players in Stephen Byrne & Mike Jay's Bristol Rovers Football Club: The Definitive History 1883–2003 no player with that name has ever played a league game for the club. Since a Google search for "Martin Grzadkowski" has no hits other than the Midsomer Norton article on Wikipedia I think he should be removed as he is almost certainly not notable. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 11:53, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Minor typo in ground history[edit]

The ground history section lists "Ridegway" instead of "Ridgeway" This can be confirmed in the following section which correctly states "Ridgeway" as a ground.

Glouscestershire Cup[edit]

Is there a reason why someone has listed 32 title wins for the Gloucestershire Cup going up until 1996, even though the Cup's page states it was abolished back in 1906, with the most successful club being Bristol City with 6 titles? Is it just to bolster Bristol Rovers' trophy count artificially? I think it should be edited to count only the titles won before it was abolished, to tie into the Cup's page. Or we can edit the Cup's page to reflect the annual matches up until the 1995-96 season and add all those "titles" Bristol City won to their page too. The Glos Cup ran from 1887 to 1996, it was not abolished in 1906. I think the confusion lies in the change of format of the competition at that point, which is when the Gloucestershire Intermediate Challenge Cup was created and the Senior Cup was reduced from an eight-team tournament to a two-team, single match format. I've been doing a lot of work updating the results and goalscorers on the Gloucestershire Cup article, but the article text still needs quite a bit of work to avoid misunderstandings like this. — GasHeadSteve [TALK] 21:31, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Verification-close paraphrasing problem: Byrne and Jay book source[edit]

Good idea for someone to check the Byrne and Jay book used for the 'History' ('Early years') section. Other source used for this section is online. But it is currently not verifying what is written on Wikipedia. Is it possible the same happens for the book?

Parts of Wikipedia relying on the Byrne and Jay book include:

  • 'in a bid to draw more fans from the local area'. And 'formed following a meeting at the Eastville Restaurant in Bristol in September 1883' (the restaurant name is not in the website).
  • Paragraph 1 of 'Into the Football League' is based on the Byrne and Jay book.
  • Also (under 'Cup competitions'), '62,787, the record for the highest attendance at any Bristol Rovers match'.
  • Also (under 'Colours and badge), 'blue and white quarters were first worn in 1931, when they were introduced to try to make the players look larger and more intimidating'.
  • Also (under 'Stadium'), 'During World War II, some friendly matches were played in Kingswood, and in their early history some games were played at Parson Street, Bedminster'.
  • Also, (under 'Club song' - a section full of unverified material that does not even show on the websites it links to?), 'Another theory is that it was sung at a fireworks display at the Stadium the night before a home game against Plymouth Argyle in the 1950s. During the game the following day, Rovers were winning quite comfortably and the few Argyle supporters present began to leave early prompting a chorus of "Goodnight Argyle" from the Rovers supporters—the tune stuck and "Irene" became the club song'.
  • 'Other notable players' has 'all details from Byrne & Jay (2003), unless otherwise stated'
