Hartley[edit]

It wasn't failure of the brattice that caused the problems at Hartley, it was the complete blockage of the only shaft for a distance of 30 yards with the broken beam and falling debris. The rescue attempts had to clear this blockage. I'm rewriting the paragraph on Hartley to reflect this. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 23:26, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Failure of the brattice (or at least, failure of ventilation) directly caused the deaths at Hartley. The miners' bodies were reached relatively soon (in mining disaster terms) and were mostly uninjured, except that they had all suffocated, owing to the lack of ventilation.
If ventilation had continued while they were trapped, they (or very many of them) would have survived. They could have waited until they were rescued.
This is not a good change. The causal nature of the ventilation loss should still be noted here. Andy Dingley (talk) 00:00, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The failure of the beam was the initial cause. 20 odd tons of cast iron and then the shaft lining (particularly around the high main coal) caused the blockage which stopped all ventilation. Apart from possibly deflecting the beam away from the cage the brattice played no part in the tragedy. Once the only shaft was blocked, carbon monoxide from the furnace and from the measures it had ignited killed the miners belowground. I've had a go at clarifying the causes and results of Hartley.
