1984[edit]

Elton certainly riffs on Orwell's 1984 (and other works in a similar vein like V for Vendetta) but his targets and Orwell's targets are very different. --Shannonr (talk) 10:48, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, Orwell wrote 1984 to discuss the dangers posed by Communism and other totalitarian regimes, whereas Elton is replacing communism in that setting with a combination of evengelical religion, McDonald's, and Facebook. And BTW, Orwell was not the first to write about the dangers of totalitarian communism, see Zamyatin's We, written a good twenty years before 1984. Wholesale rewrite[edit]

I've done pretty much a wholesale re-write of this page. Hopefully it's clearer. I've also added a "critical reception" section, and rewritten the "setting" paragraph basically using the themes identified by reviewers (rather than original work). I think the plot summary should do a little more to discuss the state of the society created by Elton, e.g., how everyone is fat, wear very revealing clothing, almost constanty broadcast every aspect of their lives, including sexual encounters and other "private" affairs, over the internet, etc. This is important because, as with almost all dystopian-themed books, it is the discussion of how the world works, and how it got that way, that is more central to the author's message than necessarily what happens to Trafford Sewell. I think you've got a point. Some of what you're talking about is covered in the summary, but certainly there's room for a sentence or two along the lines you're talking about. Glad you agree, I would normally be bold on something like this, but unfortunately I don't have any reviews handy and I am busy with other projects. If nothing happens I may get an opportunity to work on this at some point down the road, but if someone else has the time and inclination, please do not wait for me.
