Should this page exist?[edit]

I know that this is just a stub page, but I'm not sure if this page should exist at all. The definition of what "black film" is unclear and there are not many up-to-date sources to help add on to this page. Mfarmer26 (talk) 07:16, 17 March 2019 (UTC) Mfarmer26[reply]

Boldness[edit]

@Erik (talk Hi Erik (and others)! Wikipedia says be bold, but I'm suddenly fearing I've been too bold. I moved everything (footnotes, bibliography, all text, the link Erik added above, barring the information on **this** talk page, which is when I began to second-guess) to the African-American Cinema page because (1) that page like the Black film page was sparsely populated, but there was a lot more information there than here and (2) the term "African-American..." is used on a series template that links to numerous wiki pages on cultural, historical and other topics with a specific African-American angle, so it seemed ultimately the most logical place to discuss Black film was on the African-American cinema page. That said, I was also planning to use "black film" as a redirect because that might very well be the search term many folks use first. If you think this is sensible, this page and the redirect needs to be cleaned up. On the other hand, if you hate it, the pages can always be reverted. Thoughts, everybody? Hi, EditGirl99! I had not really developed the article but saw potential in the book sources that you saw listed. Generally speaking, I think it's worth considering that "Black" can encompass more than African-American, though I know the article did not discuss that. Small Axe is about Black people in Britain. Even African films may be connected, like Atlantics having its director recognized as black when it is compared on the international stage. I acknowledge that this article did not have much bones in the first place, as I have not edited in the sense of drawing material from books in a long time (mostly newspapers and such for recent films). Maybe there could be a new draft written about black film that can focus on internationality, and African American cinema can be linked to within that draft, and/or as a hatnote? To add on, most, if not all, of the book sources do consider African American cinema and black film to be interchangeable. So it may be worth looking around to see if global coverage exists for this term. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 12:23, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, again @Erik (talk!
I'm glad I asked! I was **only** concentrated on African-American topics because a lot of related information is far sparser than I think it should be, so I had not given a single thought to international Black cinema. Your international cinema thought also makes sense given that African-American issues are always classed as part of the African Diaspora — which immediately creates an argument for articles about both the motherland and the other places people have scattered. :) EditGirl99 (talk) 14:55, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
EditGirl99, what would you like to do here, then? Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 13:53, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Erik! @Erik (talk

Apart from possibly deleting this page, and turning it into an African-American Cinema redirect, I had no plans here at all. As noted, I quite liked your idea about international Black cinema, but I know so little about that topic, the odds of my contributing to that subject matter are pretty much nil. I don't know that much about African-American cinema either, but at least I have a starting point, so I'm slowly filling out the content. In terms of the Tribune link or Bibliography, by the way, please use what you need, as I'm not highlighting the information much, and even if I do use it, just by dint of personality, I'll probably do it in a different way to you. Similarly, please feel free to chime in there if you like, on anything you like. Your expertise would be appreciated!EditGirl99 (talk) 07:23, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Black films outside the United States[edit]

The term "black film" should not be considered equal to "African-American film". There are sources that write about what they call black films and focus on the ones in the United States, but the scope is wider than that. African American cinema should be considered the equivalent to "Black film in the United States". Outside the US, there are black films, like Girlhood (film) in France and Small Axe (anthology) in the UK, to name a few. Furthermore, this scope may need to consider how it relates to cinema of sub-Saharan Africa, especially when such films make an appearance elsewhere in the world.
