Professor Test[edit]

My question is if this article survives the professor test.

1. The person is regarded as a significant expert in his or her area by independent sources.
I do not see any independent source in the article asserting his expertise. That does not mean he is not an expert; but it is not in the article. I understand he teaches in a famed university.

The site indicates all the links to the places to which he is related and can be checked!!

2. The person is regarded as an important figure by independent academics in the same field.
Same as above.

Hes books are extensively quoted as shown in GOOGLE SCHOLAR

3. The person has published a significant and well-known academic work. An academic work may be significant or well known if, for example, it is the basis for a textbook or course, if it is itself the subject of multiple, independent works, if it is widely cited by other authors in the academic literature.
Same as above.

Same of his books have been reprinted several times and he is widely quoted in the field of Brazilian studies.

4. The person's collective body of work is significant and well-known.
The sheer number of publications is impressive and he definitely wrote them. No statements about the quality or impact of the said work from independent sources.

5. The person is known for originating an important new concept, theory or idea which is the subject of multiple, independent, non-trivial reviews or studies in works meeting our standards for reliable sources.

His book From Farming to Biotechnology is considered a benchmark in rural studies.

Not detailed.
6. The person has received a notable award or honor, or has been often nominated for them.
No awards or honors in the article.

The site indicates several chairs in well known universities.

Please understand I do not have anything against keeping this article, but so far the article fails the professor test.

what on the hell means: This article does not cite any references or sources.!!!!

I red the article and has links to every claim he mades including direct access to his publications. Whay you mean that he doesn´t cite references or sources???!!

Much adoe about nothing[edit]

Sorj is a brilliant and prolific sociologist. There are loads of sources and the text seems neutral enough. I suggest to remove those silly tags a.s.a.p. Yone Fernandes (talk) 06:51, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. - By the way, I am not Sorj, nor one of his students. I don't even know him personally... Sorry.

Professor Test? Pass![edit]

I don't know about "brilliant" (maybe he is considered so, I don't know about that), but Sorj sure is prolific. And he is respected as an academic. He is, of course, not one of the greatest sociologists of Brazil, but he is a very important member of the community and passes all those professor tests. Of course, they are anglocentric, which is ok. Awards and honors are not as common in Brazil as they are in the U.S., for example.

The point is, if he, someone close to him or someone else out of the blue decided to write an article to wikipedia, what's so bad about it?

PS: Yes, of course, I don't know him either. Maybe I have seen him somewhere, I can't remember. But I'm fascinated by the schizophrenic bureaucracy of wikipedia, and that is what drives me to write here. To see how this article evolves, you know.
