Liberation?[edit]

The island was never occupied by the Germans -- or by the Italians, the Japanese, the English or any other foreign power, for that matter. The replacement of the French government representitives by those of the self-styled Free French was one of many battles and skirmishes in a civil war between the internationally recognized government of France and the French dissidents ("Free French") who were trying to overthrow it -- and, in the event, eventually did so.

That said, the French government at Vichy ("Vichy France") was recognized as the government of France by the United States and many other nations from the summer of 1940 until after Operation Torch in the fall of 1942, and from the perspective of that government the occupation of the island by the self-styled Free French was not a "liberation."

Is there a neutral term that can be used in the invasion of La Reunion, or is this a case where Wikipedia follows public custom and the winner's wishes and takes a side? Date Error?[edit]

Is there an error in the year of the memorial since a memorial for 1942 wouldn't be around in 1941, "On 11 November 1941, for Remembrance Day, about 20 women put flowers on the memorial of 1942 at Saint-Denis" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.198.147.26 (talk) 16:00, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of Thorough Sources[edit]

The two listed sources are very limited- they are both historical articles written by a French museum on two military officials involved with the battle. Collectively, these two articles only contain a minority of the content of the Wikipedia page, meaning that this article is substantially un-cited. There are only two footnotes on the entire page. I am sure that there is more current literature available on the subject of the Battle of the Reunion, but this article does not appear to properly cite any of those other works.
