It was the first battle of the Mexican-American War fought in California.[edit]

This line makes no sense.
how can this be the first battle in the Mexican-American war fought in California if there were no American troops there?

After July 9, 1846 there was no further California Republic. The Battle of Natividad occurred during the American campaign in California that began following the definitive word obtained in August, 1846, that the Mexican-American War had begun.
