Very confusing opening[edit]

The opening paragraph is very confusing and overly long. Does not make clear quickly the community's primary association with India and the Indian Ocean and South China Sea ports. Much of the first paragraph should be moved to create a new origins or early years section.

This has be done. — Preceding unsigned comment added by David Nahoum (talkcontribs) 01:47, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed! I came to this article by chance, and could not understand what it was about. I'm still not sure, so I didn't try to adjust the opening. I hope someone knowledgeable about the subject could fix it up... --IamNotU (talk) 22:54, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The History should be divided[edit]

There is a clear case to divide the history into a pre-colonial, British colonial and post-colonila section.

This has been fixed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by David Nahoum (talkcontribs) 20:36, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking Help on References[edit]

I want to make the references look good, but when I click the edit zone they appear not to be there. Please advise! User:David Nahoum

The references are in-line with the text and start with <ref>. Please read this before you start, formatting and structuring references can be difficult. Regards  Velella  Velella Talk   23:04, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What I want to do is edit the links in the section called references, to put them in capsule links... but when I click edit the section called "references" I cannot see them. Could you take a look at the section Velella

Sorry, "capsule links" is not a term I am familiar with. Your addition of a link which you have numbered 31 is not appropriate and is not how Wikipedia manages its references. In the reference list, the references indices are generated from the in-line references. Regards  Velella  Velella Talk   23:13, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Velella I have now got it!

Velella What is your advice towards improving this article in general :)

Sorry, but this isn't a topic that I know anything about. In cases like this this I am simply monitoring compliance with Wikipedia standards and norms - the content passes me by !  Velella  Velella Talk   08:19, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
