rewrite[edit]

Man, I've got to stop taking on pages that need to be rewritten. It takes too much time, and looking at the result at the end of it all I'm never sure if it was worth the effort. Oh, well. 'Tis done now. Most of the information was taken from FotW (most stuff on the Web sources FotW, and my personal library is sorely lacking when it comes to the history of colonial flags), which really is a fantastic resource. Alas, the images there are all under a non-commercial licence, so they can't be used for some reason.

Oh, and there's still a bit more work can be done on this page. I just don't know enough to do it m'self. --fuddlemark 02:37, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Template for Eureka[edit]

Former CEO of the Royal Australian Historical Society John C. Vaughan has advanced this view in public.

Vaughan is a vexillographer by trade - a leading member of the FIAV affiliated Flag Society of Australia. The revised edition (Beneath the Southern Cross, 1980) of Frank Cayley's landmark 1966 book "Flag of Stars" mentions Mr Vaughan's name in the foreword. He is an honary adviser to the Prime Minister's Awards and Natonal symbols branch.

Among his other credits, he is the spokesperson for the Australian National Flag Assocation and was employed as an expert commentator by Channel 7 for the First Fleet re-enactment in 1988. It may be worth noting in passing the the text replaced by 203.51.88.184 described as incorrect the impossible claims made by people (including the emminent vexillologist Whitney Smith!) that the Federation Flag was based on the Eureka flag. This was then changed in an attempt to reflect the view put forward by some (including John Vaughan) that it was actually the other way round. I changed the sentence a bit to make this clear. Quite. The Federaton flag predates the Eureka flag.

New flag suggestion[edit]

The appearance of the Federation flag without UJ on WP userboxes supporting a new flag for Australia tells me that

  • at least one person advocates this flag as a new flag for Australia, and
  • many people are happy with this as an illustration of a desire for a new flag of some sort.

It doesn't give any evidence that this is a proposal with notable support. JPD (talk) 11:30, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
