fernbahn -> Fernbahn[edit]

Reading this article, I came across the following:

The first plans for a "Fern Railway" (Fernbahn) ...

which at first I thought was an odd bit of translation. Surely fernbahn is just German for mainline railway (or perhaps long distance railway). Much as the part of DB that runs the IC trains is called DB Fernverkehr. So I corrected what I thought was just an error.

But now I've realised that the pass that railway would have crossed is called in German the 'Fernpass', apparently after the nearby hamlet of Fern. So now I'm not so sure. Perhaps we dealing with a play of words in German that is simply untranslatable into English.

I'm not sure quite how to proceed now. I do not want to change the translation back to 'Fern Railway', if only because of the bizarre image that brings to my mind of a trainload of ferns. Any thoughts. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 10:34, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
