I've put in the Stephen King reference. Was the song used in the movie?Rhinoracer 12:52, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt it; the movie only covered the first part of the book, set in the early 60s. The song would have been anachronistic. Kafziel 13:14, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen King is a Donovan fan. In the liner notes to the 2008 documentary Stephen King writes "Donovan created songs and melodies of striking originality and often brilliant insight. In the best of them- the haunting Atlantis- he sounded a warning that's as true and emotionally now as it was when it was first recorded". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.75.56.202 (talk) 23:13, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be wrong to mention that [i]Atlantis[/i] has one of the silliest lyrics in pop music: "The continent of Atlantis was an island..."?

While obviously true, we would have to attribute this to a reliable source. Have you one? are you one? Str1977 (talk) 23:44, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Australia is both an island and a continent according to the article on Australia Grayda (talk) 05:21, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Hey Jude"[edit]

Something should be said about this song's structural resemblance to "Hey Jude," released only a few months earlier. At the time, the similarity was obvious enough that the New Christy Minstrels recorded both songs as a medley. Richard K. Carson (talk) 06:06, 26 September 2009 (UTC)Where I can I hear that version. Is on YouTube?[reply]

Interesting. However, "Atlantis" was recorded first (May) and "Hey Jude" was recorded in July. Hey Jude was released first, though. I remember Donovan claiming once that "Atlantis" was the inspiration for "Hey Jude". It's all very confusing. I.M.S. (talk) 01:08, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Donovan says in the Sunshine Superman documentary that he wanted to write something "like Hey Jude, something that would tell a story, a fairy tale". So at least he heard of it. Atlantis was recorded in November so "Hey Jude" came first.

Producer?[edit]

Mickie Most did not produce this song. Donovan and Steppenwolf producer Gabriel Mekkler produced it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.164.57.137 (talk) 23:22, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

swastika[edit]

The cover of the 45 shown here features a swastika. I realize that it's the opposite of the one used by the nazis but suspect nonetheless that there may have been some controversy, or at least a backstory. PurpleChez (talk) 13:40, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
