Plaques[edit]

I have deleted an incorrect statement in the section on the boycott. In the debate a memeber of the executive spoke to the conference to ask that the motions were referred - i.e. they were not accepted and passed to exec to ask for further consideration.

History[edit]

I am starting to write a section on AUT's history, largely based on the 2 books listed. These however only get me to 1983 and as I only joined in 1998 that leaves a big gap so feel free to contribute in this hole or anyhwere else!--NHSavage 10:51, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, although its now over 49,0000 - with a bit of luck we may get an accurate final membership size asome point. The union is still growing as a result of the current industrial action. The website will of course eventually dissapear (although it will take a few months and will be a redirect to the UCU site for a while as well).--NHSavage 10:37, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Rectify the Anomaly"[edit]

This slogan seems to be the topic of an in-joke. Can anybody explain? [1][2] – Kaihsu 10:48, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This was a slogan which was seriously used, on placards etc, on an AUT lobby of Parliament some time between Oct 1975 and Dec 1977, from personal memory. Someone will have an archive of AUT bulletin with photos, I expect. It lives on in memory because of the sheer unlikeliness of the wording, which referred at the time to an anomaly in pay levels between University staff and some other categories (civil servants? general pay levels?) but could be taken to show that AUT was somewhat different from most other unions! A bit more research finds two mentions of "Anomaly" in The Times in connection with University pay: Sat May 27th 1977, p 2 mentions "the pay anomaly which arose when lecturers lost the cost-of-living increases which were due to them when the 1975 pay code was introduced", and Sat Nov 12 1977, p 3, where Keith Hampson MP says "The Government must rectify the "Outrageous anomaly" in the pay of univesity lecturers and professors" and it says that "About six thousand university teachers are expected to abandon their lectures on Tuesday for a day of protest over pay in London". Unfortunately the Times seems to have missed out on reporting that protest, which must have been on Tues 15th Nov 1977. But I'm sure that's when we had those banners!
