Race Riot[edit]

Why is there only a brief aside regarding the 1970 race riot? 71.71.218.84 (talk) 06:34, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. That riot was one of the major events that led to the city's decline.69.141.227.14 (talk) 21:52, 26 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Negativity[edit]

Is it just me or do the photos in this suggest a lot of negativity? "Crumbling," "dilapidated," "vacant" these are all used in the captions of the photos and suggest the demise of the town. However, the article doesn't talk about a decline and, instead, focuses on redevelopment. What are hte views on this? The photos seem to suggest one point of view (that Asbury Park's a piece of crap [pardon the French]) and the article suggests another (Asbury Park: Gettin' better every day). Thoughts? Metros232 18:08, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree-- the same thoughts passed through my head as I read it. Perhaps some new photos are in order? 68.192.12.161 17:56, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The addition of >> In the gay-themed movie Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild! Tyrell Tyrelle (RuPaul) remarks that Asbury Park "will be fabulous, once the gays finally get rid of the black people." is not up to standards of Wikipedia. RuPaul is hardly capable of commenting with any credibiliy on gay and race relations in Asbury Park. Maybe the line was cute in the movie, ut it is not an accurate description of what's happening here recently (if ever). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.242.15.57 (talk) 18:57, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The crime statistics previously reported ( http://www.homesurfer.com/crimereports/view/crimereportlistranking.cfm?state=NJ]</ref> ) were from 2004 and outdated. See January 2009 remarks by Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis Valentin "Violence drops in Asbury Park - NJ.com" http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/01/violence_drops_in_asbury_park.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mario AP NJ (talkcontribs) 10:37, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Updated information has been added to the crime chapter. Please stop deleting the chapter as the high crime rate is part of Asbury Park's history whether or not it shines a good light on the city. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Puhleezman (talkcontribs) 15:01, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Asbury Park is not plagued (no such word as "plauged") by anything worse than those who don't live here, who insist on using outdated information, and who have their own agenda to denigrate Asbury Park. There are many business owners and employees whose efforts and livelihood here can be affected by your fear-mongering camouflaged as "history."

Provide a reliable reference stating that their isn't a high crime rate, and it can be removed. -Falcon8765 (talk) 21:41, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Other shore towns in Monmouth County listed at Wikipedia don't include "crime" as a section in the main entry. If you insist then put your two cents under External Links." Recent efforts by our police department and the Monmouth County Task Force have had significant positive effects on the quality of life here (I live in town).

Crime statistics usually run about a year and half behind real time. Our crime dropped last year and still is this year. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.105.91.182 (talk) 21:40, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Other shore towns in Monmouth County don't have the same problems with crime. I'm not trying to denigrate Asbury Park or do I have my own agenda as if I want to see Asbury fail. I am just simply providing accurate information about the crime problem that Asbury Park has experienced and is starting to rectify. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.159.124.36 (talk) 04:32, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Crime does need to be featured as an element of the article. Major news sources, like the New York Times, discuss issues of prostitution, gang violence, government corruption, etc. It is central to understanding the history of the town. Wikipedia is for scholarly purposes; Wikitravel is better for giving contemporaneous travel info. Thelema418 (talk) 06:22, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

have you ever been there?[edit]

This is what it appears to be! The message I get is stay the h**l away! Not so! Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, this City is on the road to recovery, after a long delay. This town is booming, with trendy, upscale, shops, restaurants and glitz! I suggest you visit and draw your own conclusion! This is a great place to live and visit! I agree new pictures are needed[edit]

Asbury has lots of new development going on and the article needs to chronical the entire life of the city including the failed renewal of the 80's along with today's activity. DCwom 00:02, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Residents[edit]

Since construction on the Esperanza has been halted indefinitely, and thus no one actually lives there, is it accurate to list John Oates under notable residents? He's not really a "resident".Terrapin7 (talk) 20:09, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, why is Springsteen listed here? The entry itself lists only Freehold and Long Branch. I've seen other sources listing apartments in Ocean Township and Bradley Beach. I've never seen anything mentioning him renting or owning a residence in Asbury Park. Without a citation, I think it should be removed.Terrapin7 (talk) 16:35, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed Someone appears to have removed both John Oates and Springsteen. Thelema418 (talk) 07:11, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure why Springsteen would be removed. It clearly says "Notable current and former residents" and it's well known that Bruce lived in Asbury Park in the 70s. Since he's the most famous person to have resided there, it seems odd to exclude him. Note that several other people listed haven't lived there in many years. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.29.158.167 (talk) 03:06, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Even if Bruce Springsteen isn't listed as a notable resident (which is news to me and most people) why isn't his 1973-released album, "Welcome to Asbury Park, NJ" not listed or mentioned? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.7.204.9 (talk) 20:24, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I removed Bruce Springsteen again from the list. The contributor's citation contained no information to show that Springsteen resided in Asbury Park. This is the main issue: a credible citation needs to be provided. (However, from what I've heard Springsteen has never lived in Asbury Park, but only in the neighboring towns.) Link to Morro Castle article?[edit]

The disastrous fire on the Morro Castle in 1934 was a memorable event frequently associated with its occurrence off Asbury Park. Would at least a link to the article describing that accident not be appropriate? 01:24, 11 April 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vivliothykarios (talkcontribs)

Fixed Corrected link to direct to the Morro Castle (1930) that sank in 1934. This appears in the history section. Thelema418 (talk) 06:29, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Photos from the early days[edit]

There are several photos of Asbury Park from the 1910s in the Library of Congress flickr photo stream, for example this one. They are all copyright free and could be used here. Rees11 (talk) 15:43, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Made a visit in 1976. worth a mention?[1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.210.7.209 (talk) 03:17, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is worth noting. The history section called "1920 and modern development" is a writing of history that foresees the current economics of the town. This perspective leaves out a lot of history, particularly social issues. The riots are spoken of as destroying buildings (an economic loss) not that people were injured and killed; there's no mention of "white flight" either. In fact the riots are attributed to "civic unrest with the government", and race issues are completely undisclosed in the article. Thelema418 (talk) 06:56, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the source for Asbury Park being a "gay area"?[edit]

This is something that many people in a community may not want to be associated with. Can someone please get a source that confirms that the area is a gay area? If not, please remove it. 72.39.210.23 (talk) 19:01, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well I found this for starters; if you do not wish to be "associated with it", that is another issue entirely.--Chimino (talk) 16:44, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I propose that this be moved to a section about community. It is currently in a section about Music and Entertainment, and it only describes the gay community in terms of music and entertainment. Also, the gay community is the only community discussed in the article. Thelema418 (talk) 07:15, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Eminent Domain and Biases in Article[edit]

I added details about the Board of Education being forced to move because of eminent domain; I believe this is the only case where eminent domain has been used to move a public building in order to build condos. Then, I realized there's no documentation of eminent domain. The word rehabilitation is used instead, and the article portrays "vacant" properties and streets without discussion of people being removed for homes and businesses in the eminent domain zone. Also, there is no discussion about failed projects and controversies with the eminent domain. The article also claims that local business and artists are responsible for these changes, but it is more likely outside investments from the speculation of real estate profits with the waterfront condo development. Thelema418 (talk) 12:58, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Moving Sections[edit]

I am proposing to move the following sections in this article.

1. The "Gay Community" section should be moved out of the "Music and Entertainment" section and placed into a new section called "Community". Currently, the material in the Gay Community section is related to entertainment, but this does not leave much room to expand the article. Also, this gives a better place to expand material on other notable communities in Asbury Park, such as the Haitian community.

2. The "Music and Entertainment" section should be a subsection of Commerce. Thelema418 (talk) 07:03, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures[edit]

Some of the pictures in the main infobox should not be on this article. The hospital is in Neptune Township, not Asbury, as is the Asbury Park Press building.
