...persuaded by President Johnson to resign[edit]

Why? patsw (talk) 12:27, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because Johnson wanted to create a vacancy so he could give a Supreme Court seat to his longtime friend and lawyer, Abe Fortas. Newyorkbrad (talk) 03:39, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why did Johnson believe that Goldberg would be agreeable to such a request? Why would Goldberg have agreed to resign his lifetime appointment? This isn't a routine request made of Supreme Court Justices. patsw (talk) 19:54, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I tracked down the answer which appears over several pages in the biography. The details are fascinating: Johnson was looking for good Tex-Mex cuisine and suggested that it be flown-in at some expense. Billy Sol Estes is a 1960's version of Marc Rich, Ken Lay, or even Tony Rezko. patsw (talk) 23:26, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Resolution 242[edit]

The section on Resolution 242 suffers from two defects. 1. It comes out of nowhere. It's as if it were inserted simply to answer an argument taking place outside of Wikipedia. It is not integrated into a discussion of how the resolution came about, any discussion at the UN or in the Administration. It is simply a barefaced fiat.

An equally serious defect is 2. It lacks reliable reference. The footnote for the extensive (and bare) quotation is to a somewhat loopy and llong ebook by business man, and ultra-Zionist Eli an ultra-Zionist, Eli E. Hertz. This is not the neutral, authoritative kind of references that Wikipedia requires.

Moreover the sentence which follows is of the same sort. It is not integrated into the discussion of Goldberg. It is asserted as another "fact" as though it were a pamphlet trying to argue some position not clear from the text of the article.

But more importantly in this case is the source for the quote. If you look at the Boston Globe article referred, the reference is to lawyer (and Zionist controversialist) Alan Dershowitz. His source is supposedly something that Arthur Goldberg told him. This is the one sentence in the entire article relating to what Goldberg is supposed to have said: "About one year after Kennedy's death, former United Nations ambassador Arthur Goldberg - for whom Dershowitz had clerked on the Supreme Court and with whom he shared a fervent Zionism - told Dershowitz that Sirhan had identified Goldberg as a potential target, too." The rest of the anti-Israel motivations of Sirhan is all attributed to Dershowitz's speculation. And even so, Dershowitz says nothing about Resolution 242. The sentence in teh article's text, therefore, is not supported by any evidence, and what "evidence" is contained in the cited source is unreliable speculation.

If this sectino is to remain it really has to be extensively redone in a neutral manner with reliable sources.

Bot-created subpage[edit]

A temporary subpage at User:Polbot/fjc/Arthur Joseph Goldberg was automatically created by a perl script, based on this article at the Biographical Directory of Federal Judges. The subpage should either be merged into this article, or moved and disambiguated. Polbot (talk) 23:02, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Claims attributed to 1984 seminar[edit]

I removed text claiming that in 1984, Goldberg gave a seminar at Boston University where he said that Johnson promised to support him for the presidency if he successfully negotiated an end to the Vietnam War. There was no citation for this paragraph. If someone can find a reliable source, these claims should be restored. Wikiacc () 13:06, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

American Jewish Commission on the Holocaust, Arthur J. Goldberg (chairman)[edit]

One thing leads to another... I read this article https://www.nytimes.com/1984/03/21/us/american-jewish-groups-faulted-on-a-report-on-holocaust-victims.html American Jewish Groups Faulted on a Report on Holocaust Victims from The New York Times 1984/03/21 which speaks about the upcoming final report on the American Jewish Commission on the Holocaust. I found absolutely nothing on the Commission in Wikipedia at all. The NYT article says that the Commision's chairman was former Supreme Court Justice Arthur J. Goldberg and when I read his Wikipedia entry there was also no mention at all of his participation. I am a big fan and advocate of Wikipedia but don't feel equipped to add these articles myself and am hoping that someone in the community might feel these entries are appropriate for consideration. I appreciate what you do. I'm hoping I didn't violate any protocols by making this suggestion here. Thanks. U262554 (talk) 04:40, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

U262554 replying to myself.
Another mention of the Commission I found in a Commentary essay of June, 1983, "Indicting American Jews" by Lucy S. Dawidowicz. Short quote... "The public life of the American Jewish Commission on the Holocaust began in August 1981, when Arthur J. Goldberg, former Justice of the Supreme Court and former U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, wrote to several dozen persons, including me, inviting them to join this body of which he had accepted the chairmanship.".
