Haiti[edit]

Haiti is no longer part of the North American Dialing System and they are certainly not Area Code 509 which is actually assigned to the State of Washington. 151.198.146.62 01:00, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Haiti did not appear in the list of country codes until 1976, when it was finally assigned +509.

As of 1964, when the world country code system was first inaugurated to replace a Euro-centric system of two-digit codes, the following were earmarked for being part of World Zone 1: Bahamas, Bermuda, British Honduras [now Belize], Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, French Antilles, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, USA, US Virgin Islands. (Ones in italics ended up in World Zone 5.) Peru was 596 at the time.

As of 1968, the following were added to World Zone 1 (for eventual inclusion in 809): - Antigua, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts, St Lucia, St Pierre & Miquelon, St Vincent. Guatemala was changed to +500 (not permanent), Mexico to +52 and Netherlands Antilles to +599. It is possible that St. Pierre and Miquelon was covered under Newfoundland area code 709.

As of 1972, six more countries were removed from Zone 1: British Honduras (Belize), Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, while Guatemala was changed to +502. Peru was changed to +51. In 1976, Guadeloupe and Martinique (French Antilles were assigned their present codes, and Haiti was added as +509; it was absent from all previous lists, hinting at an intention to include it in World Zone 1. In 1984, the Falkland Islands were added with a country code, and St. Pierre and Miquelon was as well, transferred from Zone 1.

The Caribbean region is definitely a curious hodge-podge of Zones 1 and 5, although the predominant pattern is that current and former British colonies are Zone 1, French and Dutch colonies are Zone 5, and Hispanic colonies are Zone 1 with the exception of Cuba, probably due to the US embargo. Map has error[edit]

A map showing area code info in black and country code info in red has a small error. The three-armed boundary symbol between the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands implies that Great Inagua Island is not part of the Bahamas, but possibly of Cuba or Haiti. This three-armed boundary symbol should have the left extension erased in order to indicate Great Inagua is not separate from the Bahamas. GBC (talk) 18:14, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There is an error I have just noticed. Aruba is shown (in red) as +299. It should be +297. Greenland uses +299. GBC (talk) 04:48, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

word exhausting used improperly[edit]
