The idea that United's ground is 'across the River Irwell in the Borough of Trafford' is hilarious. You bitter blues really must grow up.

Edwardian Baroque and Cottonopolis sections[edit]

Looks if there should be some surgery here. After the first paragraph in Cottonopolis- we find

The city has some of the finest Edwardian Baroque buildings in the world with many being of a highly decorative nature. The continuing urbanisation and narrow roads in Manchester have impacted on views of these ornate buildings, many of which were often decorative at the top of the building. A flurry of ornate warehouses were built, many of which dominated the area around Whitworth Street and included Asia House, Manchester, India House

Then we have a section Edwardian that talks about a single conservation issue, then a expressionist church in leafy Fallowfield- but the real Edwardian architecture od the city was in the previous section....

This sobiquet cottonopolis has really given me problems. Before this millenium I had not heard it being used- it seems to be a modern PR term, dating from 1992, used to unlock government money- it certainly is not an architectural period- Hartwell p-4-42 (which mirrors this article) doesn't use it at all. Neither is it found in English Heritage:The Warehouse Legacy. Farnie refers to a cottonopolis- very different to the Cottonopolis referencing its use to Lowe, J (1854). "A Manchester warehouse". Household Words 9: pp 268–72. Cited by Williams, Mike; D A Farnie (1992). Cotton mills in Greater Manchester. Preston: Carnegie. p. 20. ISBN 0-948789-69-7. Obscure indeed. --ClemRutter (talk) 10:50, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I haven't finished. I intend using themes from Victorian times. I think Cottonopolis is perfectly acceptable for what it describes. I'm gathering stuff on public buildings, education, etc, so it might look different in a week or so. I've been thinking a lot, not writing, until I can sort out what can be included. Don't apologise- I am just giving a little encouraging and appreciative feedback to aid the thinking process.--ClemRutter (talk) 17:11, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Still thinking but current thoughts are post 1800 and post 1900 it would be best to go for themes as a timeline would be far too repetitive. I am now putting a structure together in scribbled notes (my preferred method) and should get back to working online when I have got enough stuff to flesh out the headers. Pease continue to prod as I am easily distracted. By the way I think Cottonopolis is pre 1900, see here. J3Mrs (talk) 10:47, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have limited- internet access this week (in Newcastle with gdaughter) When time allows I will add a few comments.- I have got Images of Portland Street, and Whitworth Street up- and more to follow it does take time. I hadn't found Partridge's 1870 illusion- I will try to check that out.--ClemRutter (talk) 19:13, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
