First Amendment Audit 2019[edit]

According to a First Amendment audit published on June 3, 2019 by News Now South Florida, a group of three citizen journalists were coerced into leaving the DeSoto County Government Office. A county employee working at the tax collector's office argued with them over whether they were allowed to film there or not. A DeSoto County deputy then ordered the men to leave the building upon the request of the building administrator. The deputy was asked to cite the Florida statute that states that filming is not allowed in public areas, but was unable to do so.

Later Cpl. Matos of the Arcadia Police Department and other police officers arrived. Cpl. Matos told the men that the "people that own the property" wanted them to leave. Cpl. Matos briefly grasped a photojournalist (who goes by "Rogue Nation" and "Captain Awesome") by his left arm just outside the building. Cpl. Matos told the men they were being detained because there was a complaint against them. Cpl. Matos then threatened the men with arrest if they did not supply identification. The officer was unable to articulate any suspicion of a crime having been committed. The deputy and the police officers were asked repeatedly if the photojournalists had been officially trespassed, but never said that any of the men had been. The three men were released after the police had run their names through their computer system.

Thought I'd put this information here in case anyone thinks it should be added to the main article.
