Birth Place[edit]

I've seen sources that list Anthony Field's birth place as Kellyville rather than Camperdown. Can anyone verify? --Faustus37 17:17, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What sources? (Which is the problem with this article as it stands, but that's another section.) The Wiggles homepage lists Sydney as Anthony's birthplace, so that's what I'm gonna put. Figureskatingfan 04:23, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

Or the lack thereof. So I'm fixing it, and editing this article so that it better fulfills Wikipedia's policy about the biography of living persons. Anything that I couldn't find a source for will be gone. Many of the links to the references are broken, so I'm fixing that as well. Figureskatingfan 04:23, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Major Edit[edit]

I have completely overhauled this page. I have cleaned up the content, corrected errors, fixed links, and improved the references. I believe it now better fulfills the policy about the bios of living persons. Some things to note are:

  • I deleted the Trivia section, and folded in some of its content into the body of the article, as per policy. I may add it some things later on, like Anthony's presence at Steve Irwin's funeral and the Thank God You're Here episode.
  • I edited the content about Anthony's family. Policy states to avoid mentioning someone's children by name; Anthony currently has three kids anyway.
  • I couldn't find anything more dependable than TV.com that supports that Anthony or his brothers attended St. Joseph's College, and that they started The Cockroaches there. I kept it because it's interesting and so very Harry Potter. If someone could find a more satisfying source, that'd be great.
  • I deleted the Cleo Magazine box. It's the Wiggles' philosophy to keep things clean, and it's certain that children will visit this page. I simply linked the Wikipedia article for accuracy sake.

New Picture[edit]

I've re-uploaded Anthony's picture and put it back here. Obviously, I'm still learning how to upload pictures so that they're not deleted! Before anyone deletes, please teach me what I need to do to prevent. Hopefully, I got it right now. I'm new to editing Wikipedia, and sincerely want to follow procedure and policy, especially for The Wiggles pages. Thank you.

uM, HOW IS THIS GUY COMPARABLE TO mICK jAGGER? jAGGER DIDN'T FOUND THE sTONES, bRIAN jONES DID. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.13.142.174 (talk) 15:52, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps, but the article that I referenced made the comparison, so it fits. Please do not make these kinds of edits; it borders on vandalism. And please remember to sign your comments and edits. --Figureskatingfan 17:04, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I read that article and the comment about Anthony being compared to Mick Jagger was taken out of context. It was a joke. The Wiggles was comparing Sam Moran to Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones because he is the new guy. Then the author said that Anthony would be like Mick Jagger because of his extroverted and funny personality. I think it should be removed. It's very misleading. Azn Clayjar 19:58, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I get your point. I went back and re-read the article, and you're right--the comparisons of The Wiggles to The Rolling Stones were developed out of a joke Murray made about Sam being like Ronnie Wood because he's the new guy. I'm not sure that it makes the comparisons invalid, though, since the tone of the article is serious. Let's discuss the matter more, and if the case is made, we can delete it for clarity's sake. (It's true that The Wiggles have also been compared to The Beatles in other places, but that's not appropriate for this article. Looks like I'm arguing against myself, huh? ;) --Figureskatingfan 22:47, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence in the wikipedia article is saying that he is compared to Mick Jagger because he is a founding member who came up with the idea for the wiggles. But the article is saying he is compared to Mick Jagger as a joke and the author was just comparing him personality wise. Also only one person was comparing him to Mick Jagger and it was taken out of context. No other source does that. I don't doubt Anthony's musical talents and creative ideas in making the Wiggles, but he is not compared to Mick Jagger because of it. The Mick Jagger comment should just go. You can mention his ideas in creating the Wiggles. Azn Clayjar 16:36, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't seen the article in question, but I tend to agree with Azn. Unless there is a solid reason for making the comparison, off hand comments aren't encyclopedic. Eg has the comparison been used in multiple sources? Is it accepted by many? Would the rationale make sense to somebody else? For example, Phillip Wilcher is compared to Pete Best because he, like the Fifth Beatle, left the group under questionable circumstances shortly before the groups international success. Once you know the facts surrounding Best and Wilcher, the comparison is obvious.Balloonman 17:31, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okey dokey. I will go ahead and make the changes. --Figureskatingfan 18:16, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Figureskatingfan. I figure you put so much work into the article, I just voice my concerns to you. Azn Clayjar 20:33, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. I have two little kids and we watch The Wiggles everyday, so "the guys" are near and dear to my heart and deserving of a good article. I like the back-and-forth nature of Wikipedia, as long as it's helpful and respectful. Which you are!
That being said, I had to laugh when I came upon an article this very morning about Sam Moran that--you won't believe it!--compares him to Ron Wood! But like the other article in question, it was said in jest, so due to that and our discussion, I promise that I won't add it back in. Again, it doesn't fit. (I will, however, use some of the other info in Sam's article.) --Figureskatingfan 22:18, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's funny. But thanks for not adding it to the article. I like the Wiggles. At least their songs are not annoying like Barney. My son can't get enough of them and he is less than 3 years old. My daughter is still too young yet. Azn Clayjar 19:44, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Religion[edit]

Why does the last section on his Catholicism read like he's dead? Everything's in the past tense. --ScreaminEagle (talk) 00:51, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because this article really needs a copy-edit. Feel free to help out, if you are able. --Figureskatingfan (talk) 03:30, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re-write, part 2[edit]

I've revamped this article a bit, adding content from Anthony's book, copyediting, and re-writing the lead. I think it's a better article as a result, and certainly more comprehensive. It may even be eligible to submit for GAC. What does everyone think? Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:52, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good! I can change the book referencing to the harvnb format; should be easy to do since you have most of the footnotes together. AngusWOOF (talk) 23:53, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unlike Sesame Street, I can speak from unfortunate personal experience here; I am very familiar with the Wiggles. Alas. Sarastro1 (talk) 18:09, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What?! Ha ha, I take offense at that comment! Oh, I'm gonna sic my friend Jena on ya! ;) Thanks for the review; it's much appreciated.
  • "originated the role of Captain Feathersword and was responsible for the production aspects of their productions throughout the group's existence"
Cut out the Capt. part, since it's relatively unimportant, and reworded: "Field, who wore blue while performing with the group, was responsible for the production aspects of their stage and television shows, CDs, and DVDs."
  • "Despite Field's struggles with depression, chronic pain"; then "Field's issues with chronic pain and depression".
Did some cutting; now reads: "Despite Field's strong dislike of touring, The Wiggles became one of the most successful and active groups in Australia."
  • "In 1979, while still in secondary school (St. Joseph's College, Hunters Hill, an all-boys boarding school that his great-grandfather Paddy Condon, an Italian immigrant and masterstonemason, helped build),[1] he and his brothers formed the pop group The Cockroaches.": The parentheses make this a little uncomfortable. If it's important enough to include, I think it should be a stand-alone sentence.
Fixed, and reworded: "He attended the all-boys boarding school St. Joseph's College, which his great-grandfather Paddy Condon, an Italian immigrant and master stonemason, helped build.[1] In 1979, while they were students at St. Joseph's, he and his brothers formed the pop group The Cockroaches."
  • "and the birth of his oldest child": Perhaps "first child" would be better?
Done.
  • "In spite of being named as "The 1999 Bachelor of the Year" in Cleo Magazine, Field married Michaela Patisteas, a former dancer whose family owned Griffiths Coffee in Melbourne, in 2003": "In spite" does not work here as the two facts are essentially unrelated.
Done removed "in spite of" AngusWOOF (talk) 18:36, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "He wears two large tattoos on his arms, under his blue skivvy": Do you wear a tattoo? And does it disappear when he is wearing something else? And skivvy is not encyclopaedic.
Do you know me? No, I do not! ;) Changed "wears" to "has", and removed mention of his skivvies. (Which to me, as an American, feels really weird to say.)
  • External links: Why "Anthony's Twitter feed" rather than "Field's" or "Anthony Field's"?
Done changed name and added official website AngusWOOF (talk) 20:34, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ref 5 needs a reference; if you know what I mean...
Yup. Done.
  • Ref 8 goes to a "page not found"; Ref 23 is dead. And there are a few other issues here.
Fixed, checked toolserver and all is good.
  • Ref 15 does not support that "Wags" was taken over by dancers.
You're right, mate; removed mention.
  • "Field was made a Member of the Order of Australia on 26 January 2010 for service to the arts, particularly children's entertainment, and to the community as a benefactor and supporter of a range of charities.": As this is word-for-word from the source, perhaps quotation marks are needed.
Got it.
  • All other spot-checks fine.
  • Image is fine; are there any others that could be added?
Like with the Sesame Street articles, free images for The Wiggles are difficult to obtain. They're very protective of their characters. That being said, though, I added the NASA image of all the guys together. I should try again for more; perhaps I can ask my fan-friends and see if they're release some good images to us. Would that impact this GAC, though?
No, it won't affect this GA. It might be a little easier than Sesame Street, though, as they don't seem too fussy about images at their concerts. (I speak from sad, bitter experience of their concerts... Sigh...) Sarastro1 (talk) 09:31, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The article seems a little dependent on Field's autobiography. What about some of the controversies? It seems he took a bit of a caning from the press when Moran was "replaced" for some of his comments. And what about his continued touring when the others retired? That one is quite a big deal, including why he felt the need to continue. And a quick search reveals a couple of other controversies (such as allegations of affairs), but I imagine these are hard to source reliably for a BLP so they could be left out. My only worry is that he comes out squeaky clean, when there may be other stuff to stay.
You're right, this article does depend a lot on his book. Much of the "controversies" about Anthony were tabloid-fodder, even the uproar over Sam's "canning". I actually fought hard to avoid their inclusion in this article and The Wiggles, since they violated several BLP policies. I don't think that he comes across as squeaky in this article; I tried hard to include only reliable sources and provide a balanced view. For example, it's very clear about his ill-health and battles with depression. There are more sources that came out around the time his book was published about his depression, but they all basically say the same thing as what's described in the book. There's an argument that his book is one-sided, but there's a precedent for using autobiographies as sources for BLPs. I added a line about him staying on, taken from the main article. There are scores of articles about Anthony and The Wiggles, especially in the Aussie press, but they're somewhat repetitive and I didn't want to OVERCITE.
Not a problem here. It may be if you ever wanted to aim at FA. My personal view (and one that has no effect on this GA or anything else) would be that the "controversies" at least deserve a mention if they can be well-sourced. But that's just my opinion, and I can understand your take on it too. Sarastro1 (talk) 09:31, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Having done the spot-checks, I wonder if there may be a touch more to say on his depression?
Answered above.

I'll place this on hold for the moment. Sarastro1 (talk) 18:13, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again. Ah, this makes me want to pop in a Wiggles DVD! And now I have one of their songs in my head, which is much better than the goofy song from one of my kids' songs that it replaced. ;) Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 23:47, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can sympathise with that! At least the music is catchy. Sort of. Which is more than can be said for a lot of the stuff out there... Sarastro1 (talk) 09:31, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All good, passing now. Sarastro1 (talk) 09:31, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
