False information?[edit]

Surely most of this article is false? Bits about Paedophile Awareness Games and people going to Zimbabwe etc?

I cannot comment on whether it is false, but it is clearly unsourced, ungrammatical, anecdotal, unstructured and POV, so I would propose to revert it to the version of 10th November next week unless it has been substantially improved. Kevin McE 12:27, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The ridiculous claims that were being made here seem to have abated (or been moved to the Montserrat page), but it would still be good to see some verification of the names here. The RSSSF results page for American Samoa shows 30 matches over the 23 years, in which they have scored a total of 18 goals: Where Ellis Aitken and Steven McAuley reached the figures stated for them in this situation seems unclear. Neither of these names, nor Tony Brown, give any meaningful return when Googled with American Samoa and either football or soccer. First goal in a World Cup qualifying fixture[edit]

The article says that the goal scored by Ramin Ott against the Solomon Islands is the first goal for American Samoa in a World Cup qualifying game. But the team scored a goal during the 2002 World Cup qualifying procedure as well. See this: 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification (OFC)#Group 2. On May 12, 2004, they played against Vanuatu and Natia Natia managed to score, his team still losing 1-9. The official FIFA report of that game confirms this. Popularity of other sports[edit]

American Samoa's record-breaking 31-0 loss in 2001 to Australia was blamed on "its small population and the popularity of American football, baseball and basketball." The small population doubtless contributed to it. I do wonder about the popularity of those three other sports: those sports are also popular in the USA, which has a pretty decent national soccer team (not to mention Japan and Mexico.) Firstly, it is the weakness of the team generally, not that specific result, which is blamed on this.

Secondly, do you really dispute that the USA would have a more noteworthy soccer history than it has if the finance and personnel that goes into baseball/basketball/US football had been diverted to soccer instead over the last century or more?

Third: do you have an alternative explanation for the comparative rankings of American Samoa and similarly populated countries like Liechtenstein or Antigua?

Squad 3 1/2 years ago[edit]

The current list of players is, I assume (it has no reference), that from the team's last match in September 2007. A renaming of the section indicates that the editors keen to include this list (it had been missing for 6 months without complaint) admit that it is not a current squad. They got a win against Wallis and Futuna in 1983, however neither of the teams were part of FIFA at the time. You would be correct in saying that American Samoa have never won a FIFA sanctioned match.Aron1024 (talk) 15:59, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article Name[edit]

Every other national football team article I have seen is named: X national football team, whereas this article is X national association football team. I think the article should be moved to a new article with 'association' taken out the association name - just to blend in with other national football team pages. -User:KHarber

According to the October 2022 merge discussion, the original plan was to merge American Samoa national football team records and statistics to American Samoa national football team results, but it ended up merging to American Samoa national football team#Records and statistics. Where is the October 2022 merge discussion? I know of the one in June 2021 here which stalled because only two people took part. My original proposal was to merge anything that wasn't already contained in the parent article from the records and statistics article into the results list. As far as I was aware, it hadn't been discussed whether the results list should be merged into the parent article so I reverted that merge. Ah, I see. It's the same discussion (started in June 2021 and closed in October 2022). From that discussion, there was no discussion about merging the results list anywhere so it should stay where it was. The American Samoa national football team#Records and statistics section does not follow Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/National teams so I'd argue that it shouldn't be displayed as such on the main page but it could be moved to the team results page if we want to keep the information provided.
