Lists?

This needs editing, the lists are a tad on the ridiculous side. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.189.194.249 (talk) 23:23, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Upgrade

Upgrade of entry requested. Further information on history, notable alumni and faculty, notable architecture/buildings, and further photos (Seal of the College etc.) useful to bring page up to standard of similar college entries.Internazionale 14:31, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Sodexho?

Is the Sodexho matter of necessary description in this article? Many colleges and universities utilize such firms and the question of food quality is common at every institution. I would like to remove that material if there are no objections.Internazionale 19:58, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

I think there should be more information about this college -- its ranking, assessments, student life, academics. Tomwsulcer (talk) 07:55, 28 June 2009 (UTC)tomwsulcer

Substantive editing soon offline to happen possibly Aug 26th

I am planning substantial additions. But I need help from experienced editors. Is there a model article for a college that gets it right -- good format, proper balance of sections, good information, good sources? Please let me know so I can see it and perhaps adapt the format. I will check out other college articles and see what I like and see what works. But I agree with everybody here -- this Allegheny WP article is lackluster. Update Aug 27 2009

My editing contributions are mostly finished, although perhaps a section on faculty members, and alumni too would be helpful. I'll probably read other college articles to see if there are some new approaches to improve this article. If the list of "notable alumni" becomes too long, what many colleges do is move it to a separate list, with a link, to keep the Allegheny article manageable in size. I'm not sure the organizational layout is the best; perhaps there's a better way to organize this article in terms of sections and subsections? What would really help this article is pictures -- but there are practically NO pictures on Wikimedia Commons or Flickr that are in the public domain. If you are an Allegheny student, professor, staff, please add pictures of Allegheny to Wikimedia Commons -- please choose "public domain" so anybody can use them -- and tag them with the words "Allegheny College Meadville Pennsylvania" and other descriptors. Then, editors can include them in this article.Tomwsulcer (talk) 15:23, 27 August 2009 (UTC)Tomwsulcer

Planning more additions perhaps on Aug 28, 2009

I'm working offline; if changes happen in the meantime, I'll try to incorporate them, but no promises.Tomwsulcer (talk) 13:00, 28 August 2009 (UTC)Tomwsulcer

Updated article; one area which needs more focus is "faculty" -- publications, honors, awards, books published, etc. Other editors please expand this section. ALSO, for an example of a great college article, check out University of Pittsburgh -- well-written, lots of good information, great references; I hope the Allegheny article will be as good some day.Tomwsulcer (talk) 15:14, 30 August 2009 (UTC)Tomwsulcer

Pictures Needed

If you're an Alleghenian (faculty, student, staff) please upload pictures to Wikimedia Commons -- classify them as "public domain" (free for anybody to copy or use) and say you're the author of the pictures; make sure to TAG THEM with labels (categories) like Allegheny College, building, fall, Meadville, Pennsylvania, school, campus, etc so others can find them. And alert editors HERE that these pictures are available. Thanks in advance! Tomwsulcer (talk) 15:14, 30 August 2009 (UTC)Tomwsulcer

Great pictures. I added them, but perhaps the captions need more information, like, when was Ford Chapel built etc. Somewhat unsure about one of the buildings -- is it a residence hall (North Village?). And I'm not sure I placed the captions in the right places, like the rustic bridge should go next to the "traditions" section possibly? It's easy to move these around -- the word "left" or "right" is self-explanatory; keep the word "thumb", but other editors feel free to experiment. --Tomwsulcer (talk) 15:29, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Adding a map of the college

The interactive tour at the official Allegheny web page also features a highly informative map: [1] that I feel would significantly aid in adding context to the article by allowing the reader to visualize the layout of the campus. I'm thinking we should just add a thumbnail, with a link to the full image and the interactive tour, but the problem is that the map clearly isn't free media. Is there a rationale we can use to upload a variant of this image in a significantly reduced resolution, simply as a springboard to the full-sized map? Does it help that the map itself is clearly a promotional image? Even if there isn't any rationale I feel that this map warrants a mention somewhere in the article, as it enhances the experience of a reader who no longer has to look at numerous images of buildings that lack any sort of broader connective context.

KHAAAAAAAAAAN (talk) 04:39, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

I think the idea of having a map, or adding it, or linking to it, is a good idea. But I think you're right that the current map is copyrighted, so it probably wouldn't pass muster with the Wikimedia copyright patrol. I think it would need permission from the Allegheny administration for it to be released. But I'll add a link at the bottom to the map.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 15:01, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Also, for ideas about how to make this article better, I looked at lots of WP college articles. One of the best I found was University of Pittsburgh with great pictures and writing. But I think it's a helpful process to pick off ideas from other college articles where appropriate.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 15:01, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Actually, I could be wrong in interpreting this, but Wikipedia's Upload File page lists "promotional photo from an advertisement, press kit, or other promotional source" as an approved rationale for uploading non-free-use images. Do you think that this would qualify?
As for photos of the campus, I would need to first find my camera. But I'd also have to wait until either Spring or a decent snowfall, since "muddy leafless-tree gray-sky winter" isn't exactly the most flattering backdrop.
KHAAAAAAAAAAN (talk) 23:52, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Why not try it? The worst that can happen is that it gets deleted.Be forthright in the descriptions about where the photo came from and why you think it's allowed; and the Wikimedia picture types will either keep it or delete it. I find myself flummoxed often about the complicated copyright rules and I'm not a lawyer. About more photos -- are there indoor scenes which would make good pictures? Perhaps you're right about waiting for snowfall or spring. Have you put Allegheny on your "watchlist" so you can track changes? I think this is a good idea.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 00:03, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Excessively crowded sections

To those who are responsible for the recent expansion of this article: awesome work, it's looking really respectable now. My only concern is that the pictures throughout the article seem to swap sides arbitrarily, and some sections seem crowded by the boxes on either side. Most notably, starting at the Student Life > Sports section and working down from there, the very long Sports infobox on the right and the long sequence of uneven-width images on the left make the text difficult to follow, and also breaks formatting, causing headers to be formatted over images (on Firefox in Ubuntu, anyway). Is there a way that we can standardize the appearance of images and other infoboxes?

KHAAAAAAAAAAN (talk) 04:09, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Agree with your points. Please feel free to improve it, and reformat it for visual appeal. I have Ubuntu Linux too, btw. And one possibility is removing or re-doing the infobox with the sports information. You can shift a picture from left to right by finding the picture and switching the word "left" to "right". If you're an Allegheny student and can take pictures of the campus, consider doing so; uploading them to Wikimedia Commons isn't that hard to do (somewhat cumbersome forms to navigate). --Tomwsulcer (talk) 14:55, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Notable people

Hi. The Allegheny College alumni list has gotten to the point that it needs to be split off into its own article. See the following colleges as examples. Thanks! Corkythehornetfan (talk) 18:39, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Lead section

The box suggests that "this article's lead section may not adequately summarize key points of its contents." However, this article's overview section is not really any different than those of many other similar liberal arts colleges (e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denison_University).

If no one argues otherwise in the next few days, I suggest we leave the lead section as is. I'm not sure what else would be important to include in it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rmshaf (talkcontribs) 15:21, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

See WP:UNIGUIDE section "Article Structure - Lead" for suggested content. Although the article's lead does include much of what is suggested, it falls short vs. the condition that "the lead should be a concise summary of the entire article – not simply an introduction." See also WP:LEAD. As to the point that this article's lead is not really any different than those of other similar colleges, that doesn't justify not labeling this lead as inadequate: the others should also be marked as inadequate, hopefully motivating editors to expand those leads to improve them.
