Stranger Things reference[edit]

Given that Dungeons & Dragons is the source of most of the monster references in Stranger Things lore, the "bats" in season 4 were much more likely to have been inspired by stirges, a blood-sucking bat-like swarming creature that has appeared in several iterations of the game. Unless someone can provide a reference showing the creators or writers were intentionally invoking a reference to "alien space bats", I'd recommend that reference be deleted. 97.102.30.205 (talk) 21:32, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Last Indiana Jones Movie[edit]

Should the last Indiana Jones movie be added to "in popular culture"? This sentence from the article made me think so: "Examples include changes to the physical laws of nature, introducing magic into the world, time travel, and advanced aliens interfering in human affairs." When did Brooks say it?[edit]

A thread entitled Alien Space Bats -- whose phrase? on soc.history.what-if (unlinkable apparently) seems to be the best evidence available. It reports the first occurence by Alison Brooks on November 3, 1998. Unfortunately some of the links which would have finally verified this did not work for me. This does explain something I've wondered for many years though. I was an active reader (and sometimes poster) on S.H.W-I from the early 90s until around 96 or 97 but didn't remember ever hearing the term ASB until I returned to S.H.W-I around 2000. Improvements for B class[edit]

I think there are only two things that need to be done in order to reach B class:

  • Add illustrations, diagrams, infoboxes, etc. where appropriate
  • Make the article a bit longer (it's a bit on the short side)

ASB versus moonbats?[edit]

Is there any relation between these two terms? It seems like the term moonbat is generally used as an insult to imply that the accused is making things up or living in a fantasy world. 24.58.37.208 (talk) 18:17, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The two terms have nothing to do with each other. Alien Space Bats has nothing to do with being odd or crazy. Its about using a deus ex element or any kind of super natural element in alternate history works. --IronMaidenRocks (talk) 15:49, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ilium/Olympos[edit]

Perhaps the Ilium / Olympos series of Dan Simmons could be considerd a prime example of the Alien space bats? As these books of Dan Simmons contains time travels of historical groups to alternative realities. This results in superhumans ("Gods") from millennia in the future, interfering with the Trojan Wars of ancient Greek folklore. And if this was not enough, there was also the introduction of artificial intelligent robots, operating autonomous without any connection to their superhuman creators, and independantly entering the time divergence, thus appearing in the Trojan Wars as well. Now, I won't spoil too much of the story, but other similar events will unfold during the series.

Now, Perhaps I didn't quite grasp the true essence of Alien space bats, but I think the above storyline could fit within the frame of Alien space bats. If this opinion is shared with fellow wikipedians, than it may be a good idea to mention the Ilium/Olympos series in the main article of these "strange chiropterans from the eternal aether" (those freakin' Space Bats to be precise).DaMatriX (talk) 01:40, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, they do change the outcome of history, although this changed history is presented as an alternative reality. However, I don't know of a source connecting this story with the term ASB. DaMatriX (talk) 18:28, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
