University?[edit]

He studied architecture under Richard Lane at the University of Manchester - some mistake, surely? The university was founded in 1851, and would have been unlikely to offer architecture as a subject of study. Architects were apprenticed or articled, and other sources, e.g. http://www.berkshirehistory.com/bios/awaterhouse.html say that Waterhouse was apprenticed to Richard Lane. The article was changed from He studied architecture under Richard Lane in Manchester to the current text on the 11th March 2007 by an anonymous editor who changed nothing else and cited no sources. It is possible we are looking at an unspotted piece of vandalism; or it may be an inexperienced editor who made an assumption too far; or it may be true. Whichever, it is not supported by the cited references and I shall revert it to the original text which doesn't explicitly rule out the UoM. -- Chris j wood (talk) 10:13, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've just written the article on Richard Lane, and my research shows that Waterhouse was articled to Richard Lane and Peter B. Alley (like Waterhouse, both Quakers) in 1845. So Waterhouse absolutely did not study architecture at Owens College. Perhaps the original error was made because Waterhouse designed the Owens College buildings on Oxford Road and was later awarded the LL.D (honorary, I assume) from the federal Victoria University, and as Chris says, the editor made an assumption too far.AnIco (talk) 08:03, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Former Congregational Church (1884-5), by Alfred Waterhouse, NW3 London[edit]

Is it possible to include this building amonngst his works listed on Wiki? I have no detailed knowledge but I was part of the team that converted this amazing building to AIR (Lyndhurst) Recording Studios in 1992. R Haggas 86.22.129.112 (talk) 11:07, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On this it states about Britain’s richest man but does not say who or proof?[edit]

On this it confusing it states about Britain’s richest man but does not say who ? Can you get back to me and explain who this person is ? And also Manchester being the richest city ? Where is the proof ? I can give you ax ample why that title was liverpool.. when the Liverpool- Manchester railway was built it was Liverpool first … if Manchester was the richest city it would been Manchester-Liverpool rail way … liverpool has by far the most listed grade buildings further proof .. and remember liverpool was bomb in the blitz more than any other city because of it’s importants .. remember this was a time with out cars and jet planes and everyone had a reason to come to liverpool if they wanted come ans leave the uk . What reason did they have to go the Manchester? ACtiling (talk) 14:00, 20 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
