Number of nominations[edit]

According to the Academy's offical records (the database is at Oscar's offical website), Newman's nominations for 1937 (for "The Prisoner of Zenda" and "The Hurricane") are not officially counted as nominations for Newman. Consequently, according to the Academy, Newman was only officially nominated 43 times. see: http://www.oscars.org/awardsdatabase/ --Dole2007 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Son of Fury[edit]

It`s incredible that in the article there´s not a word about "Son of Fury", perhaps the most beautiful and ambitious work of Alfred Newman. Date of birth[edit]

Alfred Newman's date of birth is given as 17 March 1900 by

The Oxford Grove Music Encyclopedia.
The Los Angeles Times (excerpt from his obituary).
The US Social Security Death Index, SSN 551-03-1314.

all of which are more authoritative than the IMDB. A date of birth in 1900 is also consistent with the statement later in this Wikipedia article that "Newman died on February 17, 1970 exactly a month before his 70th birthday".

While it is true that his memorial plaque at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale reads "1901-1970", the most definitive evidence is that he appears in the 1900 US Census, age 2 months, New Haven, Connecticut, Ward 4, sheet 5. Had he been born in 1901, he could not have appeared on that census, at all. I realize that this is from a primary source, but it provides irrefutable clarification of which secondary sources are correct and which are incorrect. It should be noted that the obituaries from AP and UPI at the time of his death, which appeared in hundreds of newspapers across the country, were incorrect. The LA Times got it right. Fred Steiner, who worked with Newman and wrote a dissertation on his early development, gives 1900 in the Dictionary of American Biography (Supplement). Therefore I've reverted the date to 1900.Rozsaphile1 (talk) 03:28, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There are eight entries listed upon the Alfred Newman disambiguation page, with the composer likely to have greater renown than the combined notability of the remaining seven entries.
