Yeah, I just fixed the page. Amazing how long it sat there saying he failed in his 1982 reelection bid when he never made one (particularly when Wikipedia itself notes that the 1982 race was between Rudy Purpich and Wheelock Witney). I managed to reference in a page that talks about the budget crisis without saying what the above comment says, but many (most?) Minnesotans remember it exactly as stated above: he willingly sacrificed his future career to solve the current crisis. Was Al Quie ever the oldest surviving member of the United States Congress?[edit]
"Quie died on August 18, 2023, at his home in Wayzata, Minnesota. At the time of his death, Quie was the oldest living former governor, oldest living former U.S. Representative, and oldest living former member of Congress."
Al Quie was indisputably the oldest living former governor and representative. While Quie being the oldest living former member of Congress at the time of his death might be true, it's a bit of a fuzzy claim, as former Senator James L. Buckley, previously seen as the oldest living member of Congress and who was born over 6 months before Al Quie, died on the same day as Quie.
It seems like reports of Buckley's death came before reports of Quie's death, but it still seems a bit odd to give Quie this distinction considering that there doesn't seem to be a confirmation that Buckley passed first. Quie was either very briefly the oldest member of Congress after Buckley died, or never held this distinction due to passing away before Buckley.
I feel like linking a source confirming that Buckley died first, if it exists, is needed to prove the statement claiming that Quie was the oldest living former of Congress at the time of his own death.
