Status of article[edit]

When reaching this page by searching for 99615, there should be a disambiguation for the main 99615 location which is KODIAK. Akhiok is a minor rural station in that zip code. I live in Kodiak. Wl7aml 21:57, 13 September 2007 (UTC)][reply]

This article is a very rough draft, and was not proof-read to a great degree. I am currently working on getting the information from the State of Alaska's community information database copied over for each community, at which point I will come back through and start editing. If this message is still here, that means I have yet to come back. Of course, please feel free to clean this up, hopefully to conform with the WikiProject_Cities standards (or at least, as well as can be done for Alaska's unique villages and towns). Thanks!! —akghetto talk 07:07, 9 December 2005 (UTC) What is meant by "2nd class city"?? Is that meant as a negative subjective judgement? Should it be removed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.70.58.119 (talk) 02:14, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm...this question actually comes up enough to where an answer might be helpful. Since the presentation of communities in Alaska is currently an unspeakable mess, it's just one more thing to fix.
In Alaska, boroughs and cities (the only municipal entities recognized under the Alaska Constitution) are divided into classes. These classes pertain to the powers the municipality may exercise under Alaska Statutes. Hence, the term "general law municipality" is used in Alaska, mainly to differentiate from a home rule municipality. The primary difference between a first-class and second-class city, at least as far as what's transparent to the average person, is the minimum population required to incorporate and the fact that mayors of second-class cities are chosen by the council from amongst its membership, rather than popularly elected. There's more to say, but hope this helps for now. RadioKAOS  – Talk to me, Billy 21:24, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
