African Cup of Nations Trophy[edit]

Does anybody have any information or know the history of the trophies of the African Cup of Nations including images?

Form of Name[edit]

My edit to the article intro has been reverted with no explanation. (This reversion was wrongly tagged as minor.) Perhaps someone can explain why, when the CAF web site (e.g. Official tournament dates) is far from insistent on the Gallic form of the name, which appears to have been blindly translated from the French by a non-English-speaker, the so-called English Wikipedia should choose to use that in preference to the English version ("African Nations' Cup"). Or maybe I should just shut up and go back to watching the Cup of World. Grant 22:44, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The correct convention is "The Cup of African Nations (CAN)" from its French - "Coupe d'Afrique des nations." The reason for this is to avoid the initials of ANC and also to provide a nice little cache-all abbreviation for both French and English speakers. Sadly, partly due to ignorance - many have wrongly started calling it by its English name, and this has stuck. Its not really such an issue anymore. The CAF itself is actually a good example of this. It should really be called the African Football Confederation, but instead retains the direct French translation partly due to avoid having to use two abbreviations and naming conventions. Sure, here's some feedback...or more of a question really :-) Why didn't Egypt get a trophy when they won the Africa Cup of Nations for their third time? My theory is that they didn't get it because it wasn't their third notch on that specific trophy. I think the reason for them not to keep the trophy, might be the same reason for the World Cup Trophy. The World Cup trophy belongs to FIFA and winners get a replica. So I think CAF has put that rule into action, I maybe wrong. (Nsundu (talk) 09:35, 13 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Tournament Conflicts[edit]

Shouldn't there be something in this article about how the tournament runs contrary to the FIFA calandar, ie it takes place during the European club season? Every two years there are quite a few players from the European leagues that report to duty at the Cup of Nations and their club's performance suffers as a result. In England the effect is particularly evident because it is during the winter that many clubs experience a fixture pile up. Is there any particular reason why this happens, or why FIFA lets it happen? It seems to me the tournament should run during the summer like the European Championships, Copa America, Gold Cup, Asian Cup, etc. The only reason I can think of is that since part of Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere it is done this way so as to put the tournament in the Southern summer. It happen because January and February are the Summer season in Africa. A Tournament in the middle of the winter would not be very practicable.. Other reason is the African football seasons, they are usually played along all the year, so the break of that competitions are in January and February Calapez 23:59, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I replaced reference 3, regarding Nigeria's 1996 withdrawal. When I was typing in the reason, I hit enter before I was through, so the explanation isn't complete. Free use photos available[edit]

I've stumbled upon someone's Flickr photo set from Ghana 2008. The author has kindly tagged these images as Creative commons by-sa 2.0, which means they are available for uploading to Wikimedia commons ( http://commons.wikimedia.org ), and then use in Wikipedia. Swop Deal between SA and Libya[edit]

I think it is worth adding that SA will be hosting the event in 2013 while having won the rights for 2017 only due to the swop deal they made with Libya due to the current political climate in Libya. List of most times hosted[edit]

Cameroon and Ethiopia are the wrong way round I think. Cameroon have only hosted the African Nations Cup once, in 1972. ACCH (talk) 13:24, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Table for performance by nation[edit]

The table showing performance by nation has some years followed by an asterisk, howevever there is no explication for it on the page. My deduction tells they probably mean that the specific nation was host of the cup in that year. Naming[edit]

The articles on the various editions of the tournament are all called "yyyy Africa Cup of Nations", except for 1965, and 1986–96, which are titled "yyyy African Cup of Nations". The categories (see Category:Africa Cup of Nations) are also inconsistently named, but differently. Aren't we now on the fourth trophy?[edit]

"Three different trophies have been awarded during the tournament's history, with Ghana and Cameroon winning the first two versions to keep after each of them won a tournament three times. The current trophy was first awarded in 2002 and with Egypt winning it indefinitely after winning their unprecedented third consecutive title in 2010."
