Imperial gauge[edit]

Are there any sources for this name "imperial gauge"? It's not a term I've come across before, and I notice that all railway-related Google Books hits for "imperial gauge" railway are talking about 3'6"/1067mm cape gauge, with a handful referring to standard gauge or Russian broad gauge. All Google hits for "imperial gauge railway" are Wikipedia-derived English translations of the word "Reichsspurbahn", which is a rather different thing(!).

If it really exists as a term, is it just another name for "2'6" gauge" (UK terminology), "30 inch gauge" (seems to be the US term), "Bosnian gauge" (for lines in the Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council and the Lands of the Holy Hungarian Crown of Saint Stephen)? What are the criteria for including a railway on this page or the Bosnian gauge page - just the nominal 2 mm difference between 762 mm and 760 mm, which is possibly within the tolerances of amounting to the same thing anyway? I did various google searches and agree that the so-called imperial gauge only refers to Breitspurbahn, Russian broad gauge or Cape gauge. I propose to rename the article to "Two foot six inch gauge railways".
Although 762mm and 760mm allows interchangeability between these two gauges, each gauge has a particular history and should have its own distinct article. --Aaron-Tripel (talk) 16:35, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Only just read this. 'imperial gauge' was demoted in {{RailGauge}}, will now remove it completely because unsourced. Usages in articles (through {RailGauge}) will be catched in a maintenance cat for editing. (Maybe it was called "imperial" for the ft/in measure, as opposed declared the same as the mm measuring ('Bosnian'?). Say, when you order stock in England, you say 'we have Imperial gauge 2 ft 6in'.
