Name[edit]

Feel free to move the article to a better title. Regional RS so far seem to be split between "Stolac earthquake" or "earthquake in BiH". I think something like "Herzegovina earthquake" or "southern Herzegovina earthquake" would probably be more natural given the scope of the event. Daß Wölf 12:13, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Daß Wolf, I, the author of the Croatian wiki article which was also the first article about this earthquake, went with Potres kod Stoca 2022. (2022 Stolac earthquake) due to other articles about earthquakes in the region containing the closest city/town near the epicenter of the earthquake in question (as an example see: Category:Earthquakes in Croatia). Another factor why I chose Stolac was WP:COMMONNAME. In Croatian language media and "everyday speech" the earthquake was often called the Stolac earthquake. I'd like to point out that Serbian language media went with the Ljubinje earthquake, unlike Croatian and Bosnian language media that went with the Stolac earthquake. The epicentre of the earthquake was in the village of hr:Berkovići which is located east of Stolac and northeast of Ljubinje. Stolac & Ljubinje were the two towns most affected. It made sense for the Serbian language media to call it the Ljubinje earthquake due to Ljubinje having a large Serb population. The same goes with Croatian language media & Stolac. Thanks for weighing in @Croxyz: I intentionally started it with a generic title to avoid pre-empting an emerging COMMONNAME. I started 2020 Petrinja earthquake soon after the mainshock, and I feel like I chose the wrong name since it turned out a lot of the damage and the brunt of deaths happened in Sisak, Glina and the Banovina countryside.

I agree that "Stolac" has emerged as the common name in hr and bs sources, however it seems that there's less consensus in Serbian-language sources, i.e. many are calling it "Herzegovina earthquake" (zemljotres u Hercegovini), or just avoiding a name with a plain "earthquake" [1][2][3][4]. One can also consider the 1927 earthquake which also heavily affected Stolac and Ljubinje, but deaths occurred in Ljubinje and apparently the damages were worse there, and "Ljubinje earthquake" looks to be the more common name. This time it seems Stolac was hit worse and the death happened there. Re: the "Herzegovina" title, Herzegovina is a large region and the quake was not strong enough to cause damage in the entire region. So taking all of this in consideration, I think I'm going to go ahead and name it Stolac earthquake. Daß Wölf 22:12, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
