Dru Love vs. Davis Love IV[edit]

There is an ongoing dispute regarding how this player's name should be listed. I am of the opinion that Dru Love is his common name. His Twitter account and Alabama profile use this name. pʰeːnuːmuː →‎ pʰiːnyːmyː → ‎ɸinimi → ‎fiɲimi 03:02, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dru seems better to me. Seems to be name he prefers. Nigej (talk) 08:31, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Both the PGA and USGA list his name as Davis Love IV. Are they just wrong? No one can explain that away. GeoJoe1000 (talk) 14:02, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a matter of being wrong. Davis Love IV is his given name, but he goes by Dru. It's not uncommon for players to enter the U.S. Open under their full name rather than their nickname. pʰeːnuːmuː →‎ pʰiːnyːmyː → ‎ɸinimi → ‎fiɲimi 14:25, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If he went by Dru professionally, then it would be listed as such. Tiger Woods didn't use his full name for these tournaments. The only person where the name on this page doesn't match a name on the leaderboard is Davis Love IV. This is the 2017 U.S. Open page after all; Davis Love IV is playing that tournament according to every leaderboard available. So what's the holdup here? Unless the point is to be inconsistent on this page, Alexander Noren's full name is listed when, in fact, he's going by "Alex" for this tournament. In other words, the preference seems to be for full names. Why confuse things? GeoJoe1000 (talk) 17:46, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There is no preference for or against full names. When an article exists, the name of the article is generally what we use in pages like this. Norén was referred to by the European Tour as Alexander until 2014 and his article has not been renamed. Love has no article, so that doesn't apply, but it seems clear that Dru Love is his common name and would likely be the title of his article were one created. pʰeːnuːmuː →‎ pʰiːnyːmyː → ‎ɸinimi → ‎fiɲimi 18:07, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So because someone decided that Dru Love was the appropriate name for this article even though it makes no sense for this article, it must stay that way? Yo do realize that's not an argument, right? For this tournament, he's known as Davis Love IV, whether you like it or not. And you refuse to explain why that's incorrect. It seems clear his common name is Davis Love IV and would likely be the title of his article were one created. See how easy it is to say that and not back it up? GeoJoe1000 (talk) 15:49, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fundamentally the decision should be made by consensus, as everything should be in Wikipedia. And in any case the name can be changed in the future either way. The Noren example tends to indicate that his article ought to be renamed. Nigej (talk) 17:52, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like it would be easier then to use the longer version of his name until he competes in professional events as Dru Love. Doesn't make sense to have just one golfer listed in this article that isn't on the entry list for the tournament.GeoJoe1000 (talk) 19:27, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to me to be better to use Dru as per many other places, eg as given by phinumu at the top of this section. Nigej (talk) 19:55, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's not a consensus. Wikipedia has it listed as Davis "Dru" Love IV. Let's go with that until there's a consensus. GeoJoe1000 (talk) 21:16, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Let's go with what's there already. Nigej (talk) 21:30, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
