POV[edit]

On August 14 Rage Against The Machine held a protest concert outside Staples Center. A police riot ensued and hundreds of innocent protesters, bystanders, humanitarian aid group members and media people were injured. The mainstream press failed to cover the true events. Hundreds of lawsuits were filed by innocent victims. Most were settled out of court.

"In the weeks prior to the event, local media (with aid from the LAPD and other authorities), created a scare concerning "violent elements" that were expected to attend the protests. Citing the property destruction that occurred at the 1999 WTO summit in Seattle, Washington, the LAPD and media created a "Black Scare", targeting anarchist individuals and groups, to the point of requesting the public to report "anyone wearing black", especially those carrying backpacks. This was also aided by printed threats made by anonymous members of the "Bring on the Ruckus Society", a group of anarchists from Eugene, OR. Several Eugene-based anarchist also appeared on Los Angeles news stations, including "Rottin'" of the Green Anarchy Collective saying "get ready for a battle" (which may or may not have been taken out of context)."

I agree, but still an NPOV violation.

Re-organized, added a section on how RATM ended up where it did[edit]

I worked on the DNC 2000 from Jan '00 to the event. I think this article has some fine information, but not enough on many of the other controveries and issues that led up the actual event. While the anarchists, etc were certainly a part that should be told (and I'm not deleting their section), I want to add some of the other issues that popped up. I just greatly expanded the aforementioned areas. My basis for all of this in my own experience, working for the convention, designing the Media Village outside and my presense on the groud and inside the fence during all of it (guiding the media around the scene and watching it all take place in front of us). Focus[edit]

Now, is this article about the protests, or the convention itself? I mean, I can understand the focus on riots for the 1999 Seattle thing, because that really was THE focus of both the media, the police, and the nation at large, as far as that even was concerned. However, i'm sure SOMETHING other than riots and protests happened at the DNC2K. I mean...they did nominate a guy. You may have heard of him. His name is Al Gore...............

I wonder if we shouldn't move the protest information into its own article, and summarize it with a couple of paragraphs here. I've started to add some real convention information, but with 17 paragraphs on protests, it will be impossible to provide the right focus. I think you're onto something. It may be best served as a 1-2 paragraph summary here and a larger article elsewhere. I would argue the protests around the 2000 DNC were more notable than those in 2004, mostly because they happened so soon after the infamous 1999 "Battle for Seattle" and the press was looking for another large-scale anti-globalization event (there was also, sadly, more violence). --Bobak 17:46, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
