Notes on Article

Please don't change the romanized title from "kew" to "kyu." It has been swapped back and forth a few times, but though "kew" is nonstandard romanization, it is what is written, in romaji, on the cover of the novel. I'm pretty sure Murakami made it that way on purpose, though I don't have the reference that makes me think that right now. In any case, the title photograph should support this. Hi all. I'm passable with Japanese (passed JLPT Level 2) and am currently reading the novel, albeit very slowly and with the help of a dictionary. It'd be a very useful exercise for me to work on the plot synopsis here on Wikipedia as I go. Though I follow it well enough, it is possible that there may be some errors in my summary, so please feel free to correct these if you see any. よろしくお願いします。 (And if anyone wants to discuss the novel with me, feel free to get in touch -- I'd love to! The little people

The little people are not dwarfs as it claims in the plot summary. Near the end of the book, the little people are described in detail. They are not fairies, elves, hobbits, or leprechauns either. Ebisuno-sensei's name: wrong character.

I haven't read the novel in the original Japanese, I've only listened to the audiobook, but I'm pretty sure that the Japanese version of Ebisuno-Sensei's name should be written 夷野先生, not 戎野先生. He explains in the novel that the first character of his name means 'barbarian'. Both 夷 and 戎 are pronounced 'ebisu' but only 夷 means barbarian. 戎 means armaments or military affair according to Wiktionary. I've made the change; please change it back if I'm somehow mistaken. Page Numbers

It seems to me there should be some mention of the unusual page numbering. But I don't feel sufficiently bold to edit the main article. Perhaps someone with more "authority" could advise me on this.

In the printed English version of the book, the page numbers gradually move up by two lines of text for each page until they get to the top and then they move down by two lines of text for each page. This triangular wave pattern persists throughout all three books (bound as a single book). The 1Q84 "logo" is printed half way down the outside margins. On the left page margin, it is normal text. On the right page margin, the text is mirrored. Whenever the page numbers are below this logo, they are also mirrored regardless of left or right page (even or odd page). Above the logo, the page numbers read normally. The movement sequence on the two facing pages are synchronized. When the number on the right page is at the top, the number on the left page is at the bottom. As one moves up, the other moves down. They both go past their respective logos at the same time.

I don't know if something equivalent happens in the original Japanese version of the books.

The particular version of the book that I'm looking at (a library book) is printed by Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2011, and is translated by Jay Rubin and Philip Gabriel. ISBN 978-0-307-59331-3. Kimaaron (talk) 18:09, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Bad translated quote believed by author

I have just encountered the most extraordinary misquote in this novel. Haruki Murakami in '1Q84' (2011) has a chapter entitled 'Cold or Not, God is present'. (Book 3 chapter 25) in which two characters discuss the following ...'Jung carved some words with his own hand , 'Cold or Not, God is Present'. Tamaru quotes this before killing Ushikawa. The possibility that a typo has occurred is eliminated by the fact that Tamaru discusses the cold he experienced at a Catholic orphanage. Hilarious. The true, correct quote by Jung which Murakami himself seems to have not known, is of course - 'CALLED or not, God is Present'. Translators don't you just love them !
