Soviet refusal[edit]

The page's quote from the Soviets turning these games down actually is less extreme than the widely quoted, and not apparently disputed (although it's the sort of thing that sounds like an exaggeration, and especially odd in a country venerating its war veterans) version - "there are no invalids" meaning none at all, or implicitly none that the authorities were proud of and outsiders could know about. I was thinking of changing it to something like:

The Soviet Union, hosts of the 1980 Summer Olympics, were invited to host these Paralympics. However, disability sport was not yet well-developed there, and they passed; notoriously, a statement was issued denying the existence of any "invalids" in the Soviet Union. A team was first sent to the 1988 Games, the last while the Soviet Union was extant. The first Paralympics on former Soviet territory would be in 2014.Billwilson5060 (talk) 20:13, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
