Bonnies vs. Brown Indians[edit]

My searches on Newspapers.com during the 1948 football season (i.e., October-November 1948) indicate that "Bonnies" was the team's common nickname. "Brown Indians" was also sometimes used, but "Bonnies" was more common by a factor of approximately five-to-one. Compare this (107 hits) and this (22 hits).
