Wikipedia's longest article... (as of August 15, 2017)[edit]

This is ridiculous. Philmonte101 😊😄😞 (talk) 03:18, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is waaaaaaaaaaaay too long. I am going to split it into different articles. along the lines of countries. I have already split off the South Africa bit A Guy into Books (talk) 09:59, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have reduced the size of this article slightly by moving information to 1946 New Years Honours (South Africa), 1946 New Years Honours (New Zealand) and 1946 New Years Honours (Canada). all news pages for the purpose. A Guy into Books (talk) 10:16, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1946 New Years Honours (Commander of the Order of the British Empire). Schwede66 01:13, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have split off several sections. I have also deleted the 'mentioned in dispatches' sections as being non-notable. A Guy into Books (talk) 23:52, 3 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Splitting off the countries is a common sense way to split the article, however, I have reverted the hackjob done in September by the banned Aguyintobooks/A Den Jentyl Ettien Avel Dysklyver who was banned for apparently having no understanding of how Wikipedia works. Splitting the Order of the British Empire into two separate articles is moronic. I didn't do this article, but I have worked on many wartime honours lists, and this article wastes way too much space on personnel numbers (which is not of encyclopedic value - people can look them up in the Gazette if they want to know) and not abbreviating ranks (ie Lieutenant Commander vs Lt Cdr). I will work on getting rid of all that and the article should be a lot smaller. @Schwede66: as FYI. МандичкаYO 😜 18:56, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please restore MIDs[edit]

This is not an article but a list. It is incomplete without MIDs. If you use the criteria of notability then most other names should be deleted and the list is no longer correctly described. I am both a ODM expert and user of this and the other honours lists and support them being complete. If the list is gutted then all other lists should be gutted and renamed. Elsewhere, I have suggested changes to the introduction. Anthony Staunton (talk) 03:12, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Anthony Staunton: see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1946 New Years Honours (Commander of the Order of the British Empire), it is difficult enough keeping the higher honours such as OBE's, I don't know enough about the MID's to be able to find some claim of relevance, nor to convince anyone they pass WP:GNG, my thoughts so far is that anyone who has been given a medal is likely to pass WP:GNG purely on sources related to the award, I have not figured out a way to extend that to MID since it does not appear to be an award in itself, although there is a kind of 'medal' I am not familiar with. I have restored the MID's to 1946 New Year Honours (Mentioned in Dispatches) further to your comments. I haven't included an intro. Α Guy into Books § (Message) -  21:18, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for restoring the MIDs. I was amazed to find these NYH/KBH/QBH lists earlier this year which I used extensively for a project. I am surprised that there is no information statement on the talk page to indicate the scope and the group managing the project. There was nothing to alert anybody that this was part of an extensive program. The New Year 1946 list is very large being the first after the end of the Second World War. I apologise for not alerting you earlier but commend you for tackling the introduction which is much improved. Anthony Staunton (talk) 14:47, 11 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to see Wikipedia being of use :) At some point I may go through the whole lot and sort out the introductions, perhaps also integrate these lists with the main article. I noticed there seem to be some missing as well. 12 birthday honours and dissolution honours pages and the overview for India. Α Guy into Books § (Message) -  15:26, 11 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you also for restoring despatches per @Anthony Staunton:'s request - I generally left those off as it's not a formal British honour, just something that is noteworthy during wartime honours. FYI Except for India, all the red links are red because no honours can be found for these, yet, there are no reliable sources who confirm that none were awarded. Until about 1925 or so, the Gazette did not publish the lists of peers, knights and baronets, only the other orders. During the Victorian era, they frequently announced honours for military campaigns and scientific expeditions/exploration but the concept of "honours lists" didn't become common until later. It was a bit inconsistent - at least one of the Honours list I made (can't remember which) was specifically devoted to India only and was called something else by the Times. I am interested in starting a Wikipedia subproject devoted to the British and Commonwealth honours systems to improve all of these, if anyone else thinks it's a good idea. Including MIDs can be among the issues we look at. @Schwede66: again. МандичкаYO 😜 19:22, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
