Untitled[edit]

Although the party description "Whig" has been used from 1835, the local press referred to "Reformers" and from about 1850 "Liberals" (although the Liberal Party was not founded until 1859).

It is arguable that "Whig" is a classification appropriate for parliament, being largely an aristoicratic grouping, whereas at the municipal level "Radicalism (historical)" would be more appropriate.
