Divide the Undated?[edit]

Would anybody object if I arranged the undated events of 1616 by continent?

== Undates Events ==
===Europe===
===North America===
===South America===
===Asia===
===Africa===
===Australia and Oceania===

  • Any division criteria are likely to subdivide information into conflicting fragments, such as by continent versus by wars or inventions, etc. It is probably best just to repeat some words, such as "in Africa" and let people search for "Africa" or other. In a sense, there would be a need to prove that adding subdivisions significantly increased access to information, rather than increased clutter. -Wikid77 (talk) 10:02, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Condensing article format[edit]

There is a common practice of avoiding low-priority information in the yearly articles 1600-1699 (and others). For example, under "Ongoing" events, it would seem excessive to include "exploration of the new world" or most other activities that spanned over 100 years. Those overall events would be better placed in article "17th century" rather than in each year. Also, typically, a yearly article would list less than half of all births/deaths in the categories ("Category:1616 births"), by omitting people of lower-notability, such as omitting relatives of someone famous. Currently, Wikipedia users put meta-criteria about article formatting & content on the related talk-pages, but it is possible to create other subpages of an article to define such meta information in a stable location, outside the archived discussions of a talk-page. Meanwhile, I have put common formatting notes for years "16xx" into Talk:1650 as a spot central to those years. [ Ideally IMO, Wikipedia should have 2 page tabs for "Talk" & "Spec" to allow meta-specification of the format/content criteria as separate from the archived talk-page: a reader would click "Spec" to read about the agreed overall purpose and structure of the page. ] For now, see Talk:1650#Content for criteria about article content. -Wikid77 (talk) 10:02, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup April 2008[edit]

20-April-2008: I have completed much basic cleanup of the wording and spelling (proofreading the new text from March 2008):

  • restored intro title "Year 1616";
  • moved subheader "Ongoing" to level-3, changing sub-subheaders to bolded text rather than Table-of-Contents entries;
  • shortened event text in several areas;
  • shortened eruption of Manam Volcano 50%;
  • spelling: "if" ("icf"), "reign" ("reigh"), "Holland" ("Holand");
  • put verbs as present-tense; and
  • adjusted commas/quotes.

Some event text tends to elaborate beyond the actual announcement of the events, and they could be trimmed somewhat, but there might be a need to create sub-articles (or sections in other articles) to contain the details being trimmed. Also, perhaps 10% of the events are not notable within the intended scope of the article: it is not about every festival or marriage in 1616. Creating new sub-articles for particular names might be needed, because Wikipedia lacks many major topics at this point: I just recently created article "Merger mania" in 2008, after 50 years as an expression. Feel free to create sub-articles about notable topics. -Wikid77 (talk) 12:12, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kalmar War[edit]

Why does it show up in the Ongoing section if it ended in 1613? I'm removing it. 194.125.78.202 (talk) 20:40, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Citation added[edit]

I added a source to the section on Richard Burton. Catk6193 (talk) 02:11, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

After doing some research, it has come to my attention that the individual named as 'Richard Burton' in this article is actually Robert Burton. I changed this in the article and added another source about his life. Please find my edits in his section which is under the 'July-December' section. Thank you.
